Stopped in and bought a 30# bag of Joe’s Mix today – good mix of sunflowers, chips, corn, peanuts, etc. and no millet. $42 + tax. A few years ago that bag was was 40# for $25…. Definitely not in the budget.

I know there is cheaper stuff around and seed prices have gone up… Guess I’ll have to start looking for options. Anybody have a good store, coop, elevator, etc. in South, West or Northern suburbs that sells good quality bird seed at a better price?

If have a fleet farm or farm and fleet near you they seem to still be reasonable.

I always get a bag of sunflower seeds, safflower and corn feed from Mills Fleetfarm. I’ve noticed a bit of a spike in those seeds too, but the sunflower seeds and corn from FF is hard to beat. I’d also be interested in any other options out there, since I have to travel from Richfield to Lakeville.

peanut prices are way up, your mix has peanuts in it.
I figured out the ratios and have been buying seperate bags for each ingredient for a few years and peanuts are the $ killer for my cardinal mix.

Just throw some chopped corn out, brings them plenty close enough for standard trap loads.

Go out to some local farms and see if they will let you glean their fields. There is always a lot of dropped ears in corn fields and many may let you pick it off the ground for free. Easy to hand shell a few ears each day to feed the birds.

Scarecrow and/or bird-shot.. Or… even an outdoor barn-cat. problem solved.

If anyone is ever looking for the corn, it isn’t in the bird seed aisle. It is in the horse/swine feed area I believe.

I get it for the feeder in the front of my house. Its gotten a chipmunk to visit, along with the squirrels.

Sure its cheap, but I used to get it for like $9.00. Seems like all the bird food has gotten about a 10-20% spike.

Cost of Diesel fuel is the cause of the price hikes.

    Trucking the raw seeds
Tractor fuel to plant and harvest
Trucking of the finished product to the stores

    You forgot a couple.

Trucking from farm to seed facility. Fuel for running all the elevators and separators. And then fuel to the stores.
