I am researching Springer Spaniels, and am curious what the difference is between the Bench line and the Field line is.

Do only the field line hunt? Are the Bench line more for show? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure about the bench thing. I have a field cocker spanial and she is a hunting machine. I bought her from a guy who guide hunts the parents. If you want a hunting dog make sure the parents are hunters.

I spent 20+ years hunting, training, and competing in field trials with pointing dogs. Training can make just about any dog APPEAR to be doing the desired outcome. I think withan e-collar I could get a Basenji to look like it was pointing, for example. The dogs that have INSTINCT to do what they were bred to do are the ones both a beginer and an accomplished trainer and handler want to have in the kennel.
    Good luck.

The site that you linked to is very good. Most of the info is dead on.
That said, I have hunted with 6 Springers now in my life. 3 bench and 3 field. All have been very good hunters. They all came from hunting backgrounds so they all had good genetic instinct. I think seeing the parents and grandparents, as well as talking to the owners about how they use thier dog is the best way to see what you are going to get.

Whatever you do, don’t take a trained bench dog in full show coat out the day before you show him for a afternoon of pheasant hunting, especially where’s there’s a lot of burrs and duckweed.

Either way you go, make sure to check the lineage of both sides, lots of people breeding for bucks out there…

generally the less bench you have in the line, the better off you are. It’s an odds game.

also buy from a kennel that BREEDS ONLY, not a BREEDER/TRAINER. Conflict of interest.
