Doesn’t the dnr usually have a gate blocking fish from entering the rum by 169? Just wondering, I stpped by to see if any pike were moving yet and there wasn’t one there any more.

There is a dam just up stream, can’t imagine any fish making it up and over that…except in an exceptionally high water year.

I remember it as a kid but it has been gone for a while. The posts / pilings were there for a number of years though.

I know a few of us have talked about it, but is the Rum a good place to canoe down? I’m talking generally, not when the thing is just a trickle like last summer. Is it tough to get around the dams? I’m thinking Shakopee to Mille Lacs. Smallies or do a wide variety of fish call the rum home?

Everything is in that river. I used to take float trips down it for a weekend here and there. Lots of fun

The Rum goes from Mille Lacs to Anoka where it flows into the Mississippi. I have canoed the lower part of it a couple times and it is a good time. Last summer we put in around St. Francis and went down to the Anoka fairgrounds.

I think I may have confused a few, I’m thinking of Lake Shakopee by Onamia, and follow it to Mille Lacs. Does it dump in just South of the Casino/reservation?

The Rum flows out of Mille Lacs and runs south to the Mississippi. Legend has it that thats why there are such big walleyes in the Mississippi. They originated from Mille Lacs many many years ago.

yep! flows from the pond. Had my head screwed on wrong. The lake on the west side of 169 is Lake Ogechie, which looks like a shallow lake surrounded by reeds. Anybody fish there? Thanks for the map Matt, it looks like there is a place to dump a canoe in between Ogechie and Shakopee, even a place to camp? Do you have to bring you pistola’s back there to protect yourself? Like I said, some of the crew members were talking about this one night around the fire, one guy has a couple of kayaks.

There is quite a few fish on the Rum… Really decent fish at that considering the size. I have caught some nice sized small mouth right downtown St Francis. I have also caught 20+ inch walleye right down town Princeton. Believe it or not… that small little river has some big fish in it. Pigs for sure!!!

as was mentioned earlier regarding fish going over the dam, it must happen, there is documentation of northern pike tagged in Mille Lacs being caught in Shakopee Lake. I would imagine even rough fish make it through in high water. That Ogechie lake looks like a good bullhead lake (according the the DNR survey) So maybe we could advertise that to the catfish club and they could go over and catch some for bait.
