Anyone else fish a lake on opener where the green cloud/blob algae was really bad this year? My family’s cabin is on a lake with really good water clarity, I don’t know if it was increased winter light penetration and an earlier ice-out, but the Filamentous algae was the worst Ive seen it. A bay that we normally fish had large floating mats and blobs of it suspended throughout. It’s natural but the amount seems to very every year from nearly non-existent to downright choking. And thats what it was this year, I’ve never seen it as thick as it was. Bad part – it’s unsightly, and coats your lure or jig in slime if end up casting into it or reeling through it. Good part is that the whole food chain seemed to congregate around these large masses. We caught a lot of keeper panfish fishing around the blobs and the pike and bass were nearby, as well. Still, I kinda hate the stuff. It usually only lasts a couple of weeks, floats to the surface and drifts away. Anyone else experience a lot of it this year?
