Yamaha F75 – any issues?

Ok, I know this is an open ended question but I have been out of commission since taking the shaft on a motor I bought 6 months ago and trying to get myself back into the game this year. Last year’s upgrade turned nightmare involved a 2005 75hp E-Tec with only 100 hours on it. I won’t go into details here but I no longer own the motor…

I am currently looking at a 2005 Yamaha F75 Tiller (4 stroke) and wondered if anyone had any comments to share on this unit. This unit is set up with an added rpm adjustment for trolling.

    Thanks

Mike W has been through a pretty similar experience. If he doesn’t see this, you should PM him.

I think Mike W went through this exact same scenario… trouble with a 75 Etec and made the switch to a 75 Yamaha. You might want to touch base with him to get his take on things as he’s “walked in your shoes.”

I have a 06 F75 non tiller I think it is a great motor. It is quiet and very good on gas. It pushes my 16 1/2 foot Lund real good.

I have ran my dads 75 yamaha with the VTS (variable trolling system) and I think this motor is great. I can troll this motor down to about 1.3 no wind or current. this motor so far has been bullet proof, great starter, great on fuel, and very quiet. If a tiller boat was in my future a yamaha motor would be 1st on my list.

I had a 08, 75 Yamaha until I got T-boned last spring on the opener. I now have a 09, 90hp Yamaha. The 90 & 75 are the same basic motor and they both run top notch! I could not be happier with either one of these motors. Quiet, smooth, 4 stroke, VTS tiller handle. Nothing but good to say about them. Just love the motors.

I have an 05 75 yamaha tiller on a 17 ft lund. Have had it since new. LOVE it. With the vts I can go under 1mph in forward and back troll at a crawl. Quiet, good on gas, always starts. Had a lead that wasnt soddered on at the factory. That was found in the first 2 months, dealer fixed it right up, and have had no issues since.

You seem to be on the rite track. I havent had any problems with my E tech since it was traded in on a new Yamaha. I do have to say the Etech was a nice motor when it ran properly. Even with that said Im much happier with the Yamaha. Even on the E techs best day the Yamaha is a much better preforming motor. 75 hp tiller is what Im running.

    Here is a few comparisons.

Top speed goes to Yamaha by just a couple of MPH.

Hole shot goes to E tech. This motor will dump you out the back of the boat if you are not holding on.

Fuel economy. I think E tech was a little better but it is so close Im just guessing.

Noise goes to Yamaha. Its a very quiet motor. Etech was pretty decent to but just a touch louder than the Yamaha.

Reliability has to go to Yamaha. 2 years now and not one issue yet. The 2 years on the Etech was 5 or 6 trips to the shop and I cant tell you how many shot fishing trips.

Tiller arm goes to Yamaha. They put a lot of thought in that tiller arm. Very user friendly. If you troll the VTS will be great.

    Hope this helps.

Talk to Jake. I think his new boat has a 04 or 05 75 Yamaha tiller on back. May be the same motor. Mine is a 08.

I have had my 05 F75 tiller for one season and really love it. The VTS feature is awsome! I would not think twice if I were you.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I’m really excited about and hope it works out the way it is shaping up. The deal is not done yet and I hope I’m not jinxing anything but it’s looking good.

My E-tec was bought from a private party who replied to an add I placed here last year. I guess I have to accept some of the blame for not having it thoroughly checked out by a competent mechanic. The top cylinder burned up the 3rd time on the water and I took it in the shorts from there until I sold the motor. I learned a good but painful lesson on that one that I will not make again.

Thanks again and I’ll keep you posted on how this turns out. I should know in a week or so.

I have a ’07 Yamaha F75 w/VTS and it runs so smooth and quiet both trolling and at full speed! I run a 13-1/4×17 ssp on mine, great hole shot and the fuel mileage is unreal too..

    I don’t have a 75, I have a 50. If there is a better engine I have not seen it.

In my book you can’t go wrong with a Yamaha.

I have a F40, 2003 model…runs great. Does anybody know if I can retro the new tiller handle, with trolling control, to my 2003? By the way..the 40 is a sweetheart.

Thanks again guys. I know there can be issues with any motor or any product for that matter but it sounds like Yamaha has a good thing going and I hope to be part of that before too long.

    2004 F75.

    No problems for me.

There are days where its running 8 hours non stop pulling cranks.

    Great motor.

    Hi all,

Thanks again for the replies and info. I have pulled the trigger and am now the owner of a 2005 Yamaha F75 tiller. The motor has 320 hours on it which most guys are telling me is low for a 5-year-old engine. Either way, it all checked out at the dealer plus had a little service done and it’s ready for open water.

Now I just need to decide if I keep the boat it came with or move it over to mine other rig??? Nice to have options I guess.

    Thanks again,
    Dave
