Just purchased the SE 300 Hydrofoil and bought the SportClip as well.

Has anyone tried to install a “SportClip” (No drill method of attaching the hydrofoil) to a Yamaha cavitation plate yet?

    Thanks!!

I haven’t so I’m of no help. I thought long and hard about going that route and in the end I just opted to break out the cordless.

I was hoping the install of the clip was a little less intense.
I have the batteries for the DeWalt on the charger
    though!

I’d be real interested in a nice write up if you do it with the clips, I got a hydrofoil laying around somewhere it would be interesting to try out on my boat.

I ordered one from Cabela’s a couple weeks ago. Was going to go the no drill route. The catalog was very vague about which motors it would fit so when I asked the order taker about it she said her computer brought up an alert pertaining to which motors it would NOT work on. My merc 4 stroke was one. She saved me some time and money on having to send it back.

Yeah, I attached the Sport Clip with the SE 300 Hydrofoil to a Yamaha 115. I’ll help if I can.

    jd,

Did you have to use longer bolts because of the way the trim
tab is rounded and sticking below the cavitation plate?

Was there room on your 115 to use the “stainless tab catch”
over your trim tab or did you have to do some filing for it
    to fit?

I would assume the trim tabs are the same on the 115 and the 150.

My boat is 200 miles away so I want to be prepared to install the foil without having to run for hardware.

Any other install tips you may have would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dan

I did not have to file anything on the trim tab for the catch to work.

I didn’t use longer bolts or any hardware other than what was included in the packages for the Clip and the Hydrofoil (exception below.) You will probably want an extra set of hands to help “squeeze” the pieces together to get the threads started.

Hardware exception: I had to get 4 more small washers as I misinterpreted the instructions and used 4 of the washers during the “squeezing” step mentioned above. I didn’t want to take the thing apart so I held off mounting the Hydrofoil until I picked up 4 more stainless washers.

The reasons I got the sportclip were threefold. Above all, I just couldn’t imagine myself drilling holes in my motor. Second, I wanted to see if there was any improvement in performance. If not, I was planning on taking it back. If that happened I would have been really upset with the holes. Third, I was (and still am) contemplating upgrading at some point to a Yamaha 150. I would like to put the SE 300 on the new motor and don’t think the new owner of my 115 would appreciate holes in the cavitation plate.

I don’t want to hijack this thread but here is a link to se sport and the no drill clip for those of you wondering if it will fit your motor.

    Thanks JD,

My reasons are the same as yours for using the SportClip.

Along those lines can you comment on whether or not the

    hydrofoil has improved performance.

    Thanks again for your help!!

I think without question, it improves the time to plane out. Top end may have been sacrificed a little bit. However, if I trim way up, the top end is about the same. That said, unless it is very calm water, I can’t trim way up or I will start to porpoise.

I think control has improved. I believe the speed necessary to stay on plane has decreased.

I had been thinking about getting the SE 300 for quite some time. I even purchased it and let it set for a week and a half before deciding to put it on. The post by James is what pushed me over the edge to install.

I am a little underpowered on my boat (whole nother story) and would like to have a 150 Yamaha 4stroke. If I do that, I would still like the SE 300 on it.

Snapped the fargin bottom clip almost in two today.

The instructions did say to “tighten until very snug”.

    Hey JD,

Does your trim tab go over the bottom clip cut out?

The way I see it it won’t work to have the trim tab cover it

so in my opinion all that marking of the the hydrofoil on top of the top clip, on top of the cavitation plate, was a waste of time.

The gap between the trim tab and the cavitation plate is 1/8″ and the thickness of the bottom plate is 1/4″+ so one is very limited to the positioning of the bottom clip.

I ended up with the bottom clip being placed an inch aft of my marks on the cavitation plate from step #1!

I won’t be testing the SE 300 this weekend!!

    dandorn,

In the end the trim tab will be just like it always is…except with the Sportclip stainless steel catch tab inserted into it. It does take a little bit of maneuvering to get the Sportclip, the catch tab, and the trim tab all in the right places. That is another reason you may want to have an extra set of hands.

I will see if I can get a couple of pictures up here for you to see the end product later tonight.

    JD
