    Hey there everyone,

I’m going to mount some fishing rod holders in my boat and need some feedback.

I’ll be mounting a total of six brackets with five of them being located in position (A) as shown in my drawing. Three of these will be along the starboard gunnel and two along the port gunnel. Two ( one each side)will be near the bow, two (one each side)will be midship and two near the stern for me, the driver (tiller steer).

The question I’m faced with is the mounting position for the last bracket, on the port side, near the stern for the driver. Do I put it at (A) where it matches the rest of the brackets but is out of reach for the driver?

    OR

Do I put it on the interior sidewall, in position (B) where the driver can reach it with out leaving his seat?

And don’t just say “Put it where you want it” Ya I know thats all that really matters but,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I still want your responses.

    Thanks

what kind of fishing are you setting them up for? Do you fish mainly lakes or rivers or both? Bottom fishing or trolling? That info will probaly help you get more replys.

because you might me running the motor some or all the time
I would use B when trolling the rear most rods are run closest to (narrowest spread) to the boat so with your rod in “B” pos. your tip is closer in to the boat
and you wont have to leave your seat to grab a rod

I would go with position B. Also if you plan on trolling with this set up I would make sure the back two (yours) are pointing in towards the center of the boat. Not at a 90 but about a 45 or a little less.

    Hope that helps.

I guess I would have to ask how wide is your boat? And how long are your handles on your trolling rods? If it`s narrower or longer handles then I would use A. My lund was narrower and at postion B it would of been in my way all the time. Especially to get up and pick up my front rods.

I personnelly like to keep the inside of the boat obstruction free as possible, especially fishing at night.

Position A is good for everything, position B is best suited for still fishing, and not very practical for trolling with the high rod tip positon.

Position A will also allow your tip to be further from the boat for trolling.

Most people unless your a cat or sturgeon guy dont have much use for position B

    OK, some more info.

I plan to use these for trolling walleye and muskie cranks so the motor will be running and with a tiller I need to maintain boat control at all times. The picture below is an overhead view of my boat. I added white square indicating where the rod holders will be.

These are the holders I will be installing.

I think if I use their “high lift” extension and mount that one at position “B”, that might be my best option. What do you guys think about that?

Sit in your boat FIRST holding 2 rods in the places that you are thinking of putting the 2 rod holders close together. You need to make sure they are spaced apart enough so you can grab one rod without your hand interfering/hittig the one next to it. Also make sure the long rod handles aren’t too close to each other and also don’t block the view of your gauges. I don’t know how wide your boat is but be sure that a long rod handle in rod holder B position doesn’t get in the way of your knee or your hand when turning the motor handle to that side for a turn. Best to be safe than sorry so you get them done correct the first time.

    Thanks, Bill

ps. Have you checked out the Folbe rod holders? They look like they could be possibly be just what you might want.

Thanks for your reply Bill. I guess I wasn’t too clear. I won’t be using two holders on that side. It is a either/or question. One rod holder will go at either “A” or “B” I’m leaning towards “B” because my boat is 88″ wide and I can’t reach the rod at “A” with out getting up out of the seat. I normally have a tackle box sitting just forward of where The rod would be if located in the lower position. The rod handle will not stick out beyond the front of the tackle box so I think leg room will not be negatively affected.

I do appreciate everyones comments and feed back. I plan to check all these issues before drilling any holes. It’s nice to check with others just to make sure I’m not overlooking a potential problem.

When I had my Lund tiller I would adjust my friction knob so I could let go of the tiller and walk around the boat to check rods or pull in fish.

I would allso check your holder postion behind you so it is far enough forward to not be in the way.
