I purchased two 520’s from Jolly Wade this spring and
received different software versions on each,
    1.4 and 1.5.
I went searching for the 1.5 update and it wasn’t on the
site so I made the call to Lowrance.
They told me it wasn’t available because 1.6 was being
released in a couple of days. (over 2 weeks ago)
I called back today and now a 1.7 update is available.
They e-mailed it to me today.
I guess 1.6 had some issues and never made it to their
    site.

Did they tell you what the main difference is going to be?

    Sonar algorithm update

I’ll keep you posted on if it helped with the shallow
    water loss of signal.

You need a card and card reader to do the update right?

PierBridge, I hope you mean “horror stories”.

If you don’t have a data card reader you can contact Lowrance and they can send you the update. The use your CC for security so you’ll send it back.

Otherwise an “SD” card and reader will set you back around $30 at walmart, I think the SD card only needs to be 128 megs or so, I use a 256 meg card to do the updates on mine, pretty much you should be able to find an sd card for around $15, and a card reader for $15, you don’t need a big card, you don’t need any name brands. Personally I’d stay at 1 gig or under myself, 128meg 0r 256meg is probably all you’ll ever need.

You can either load the file onto the card yourself, or lowrance makes a nifty little program that put it on the card for you. It’s pretty easy really.

Pick out your unit here http://www.lowrance.com/Downloads/Updates/default.asp attach the card and card reader to the computer, and click on the install now box, after you click on the unit you are updating. Instructions are there on the page.

****Note not all units have new updates available as far as I can tell right now, there are instructions to figure out which version you are running now****

Hello Guys, I only have Macs at work and home. If I buy a reader and do the download, does anyone know if it will matter if it was done on a Mac or IBM compatable?

    Thanks,

Shouldn’t make a difference if it is on a mac or windows machine. The SD card is just like an external hard drive or a memory stick. It just writes the file to the card.
