Leadcore set up

this subject may have been beat to death here BUT…

If one was to buy a leadcore set up what would be a good reel to start with ? I like the Abu Garcia 5500 C3 reels ,would they work or does one need a linecounter reel?
Is there a better leadcore line than others and what exactly does each color length represent.

I am a “jigger” by heart and after reading a few other peoples post I’m thinking my lack of interest in trolling is costing me a more enjoyable time on the water.

With the price of gas today we need to do as much as we can while on the water to make the time a good memory and I now believe trolling will add in making those days more enjoyable .
I have read about when, how to troll, lures to use and depths.
I need information on basic equipment needs, I believe I have a good rod to use a Berkely Gary Roach series 7’med or med hvy/mod action, works very well while nothern fishing ,but I gave it up 4 years ago when I took up walleye fishing serious.

Any help will be appreciated greatly

    Thanks Jeff

I’ll try to answer some of your questions, my own preference would be a Diawa sealine(SG47lca) but a Diawa accu-depth is about 1/2 the money and will work fine, You need a reel with a large spool as the leadcore takes up a lot of room and a linecounter is a must to get your bait to the exact spot every time, The colors tell you how much line you have out and can be used like a linecounter if you don’t have one. I’m sure everyone has a favorite line, but for me It’s cabella’s 18 lb, as far as rods, again everyone has there favorite , We run the short rod behind the boat as do most, so we use a 6’6″ cabella’s and it seems to work great. A Accu-Depth will run about $50.00 a seeline about twice that and a good rod about 35-$40.00, Line about $15.00.
If your looking to get into Trolling to see if you like it Cabella’s has a accu-depth combo deal right now ,buy the reel and get a lead core rod for free, check their online site.

Penn 310 or 320’s if you don’t want a linecounter

Daiwa Accudepth PLUS or Sealine 47. The plus is silver and a newer model than the original. MUCH improved.

    Rods

Inexpensive rods like Shimano TDR’s, Ugly Sticks and that work fine. I’m using 10’6″ Daiwa Heartland Salmon rods personally on leadcore rods these days. If you run 4 rods, pair them up with the 5′ Scheels “Shorty” rods Jim Carroll and Johnnie Candle designed.

The Abu 5500 is way too small. If you go non-line counter, take a look at these TR-200. The reel will hold all 10 colors plus backing and leader. Can’t beat the price and I have run a set for over 10 years now.

    Reel

A “color” of lead is 10 yards. I count colors just fine without using a line counter. Guys (and Guides) running multiple sets like the LC and I don’t blame them. A lot easier to set out the line counting feet than colors when running 4, 6, or 8 rods!

I also run the Cabela’s line. But I have never heard of a bad brand of leadcore. Everyone has their opinion on length and action. That Gary Roach rod should do just fine for starters.

If running multiple rods,I think you would regret not getting linecounter reels, especially if new and learning IMHO.Good luck!

I’m running the Okuma Magda 15 linecounter reels and have over 3 years on them with no issues. I’m using some Ugly stick rods right now that are fine but looking to upgrade. Stop out and see HOF. Mike has Okuma in stock or can get very quickly.

For running lead I have 2 basic setups:

Long rods (St Croix PGT80MM) with Diawa Sealine 47s
Short Rods (Peregrine 5-footers) with Diawa accudepth 27s.

Long rods on the outside and short rods on the inside, basically straight out the back. Next year, I’ll be moving up to longer (10-foot or more) outside rods to cut back on the tangles when running 4 lines.

Dean at Everts has all this in stock (or can get in stock quickly). He also has some 8’10” telescoping outside rods (also Peregrine I think) that work very nicely. Heck, Dean is getting into leadcoring so much that he even carries the line!
