I currently have a 14.5 x 23 on a 150hp vmax hpdi pushing a skeeter sl190. Looking at a 25 pitch or maybe a 27 if practical. I have minimal bow lift now and don’t think holeshot will be a huge issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Which 23 pitch prop are you running? How many RPM’s? What is your GPS speed? Jackplate? How high is your motor set?

I run a cupped 25 on my 18.5ft Cajun w/ a 150 Yamaha. Like the previous post asks, you should know those details before going ahead but my guess is that a 25 will be fine. I’m not sure what new Yamahas want for RPM but I try to get mine at around 5500 RPM WOT.

    Hey Jeremiah,

I run the same 150 Vmax HPDI, according to Yamaha it should top out at 4500-5500(big range)but I have been told by two different dealers that 5000-5500 is more Ideal. On my ProV I have a TempestII 21 pitch that gets that RPMs to about 5400…..after throwing all other factors aside and just changing the prop size to get the RPMs in the perfect range I found the best top speed and holeshot On your boat the prop pitch will obviously be different but the key is the R’s

Ps:Since I dont have a jackplat I manually raised my motor to the top hole after putting this prop on and it stabilized the boat more at top end and made the exact trim level not as important.

At top end I’m looking at 5200 rpm and approx. 56 mph (GPS). I’ve also noted the top at 5500. I’m running a Yamaha Pro prop I believe. No jackplate and I’m not sure on the mounting height.

my buddy runs a 25M on his 150Vmax/Skeeter TZX190 combo. If you went with that prop, you’ll drop a few rpms, but it SHOULD give you a couple more MPH. Add a jack plate and you should be able to see at least 60 or so, IMO.

Look into a 4 blade , that worked for me in terms of bow lift.

Stepping up a pitch may (stressed may here) increase your top end but will definitely drop your RPM’s and lengthen your hole shot in a negative fashion.

Look on the outside of your prop – it it stamped 23-M? If so this is Yamaha’s Pro Series. You may want to try a 23-T – Yamaha’s Vmax prop which is a newer prop released in ’05 I believe that is specifically designed for bass hulls.

You want to run that engine as close to 5500 RPM’s as you can. Then newer Vmax HPDI’s are rated for 6K RPM’s, but running these engines closer to the max recommended RPM’s is a good thing.

    Good luck!
