Need help> Yamaha 150 has one cylinder no spark

I have an older 1989 Prov 150 with one cylinder not firing.
I have switch coils around and the one cylinder still does not fire. Last year I put in a different stator and it ran good for 3 outings then back to the old same-o. Compression on all cylinders are at 125psi

I should mention when all this started happening it was intermittent, meaning it would run fine then the motor would bog down eventually getting more frequent then finally all together not running well at all. I tracked it down to one cylinder not firing.

After replacing the stator I have since learned the stator just generates power and does not direct where that power goes from understanding.

Now, I may be down to 2 options the pulser coil or the CDI unit. I don’t know what each of these do and to replace them at trial and error be way to expensive at $400 TO $500 A PIECE.
Each of these units were all sent out to be tested and all came back positive for meeting (resistance values?),working properly. The mechanic that is helping me with this is stumped he contacted Yamaha and they could not answer the question either, all they could come up with is start replacing parts till you find the problem.

    Any ideas be greatly appreciated!

IF nobody else comes up with a way to diagnose your issue I’d recommend you call Skeeter Boat Center and ask for Gregg or Sean. Gregg is the manager. Sean is one of the most highly trained and accomplished service techs for Yamaha in the Midwest. He’s been able to solve a couple issues for friends that absolutely stumped technicians at other dealerships.

If anyone is going to know of a way to isolate your issue without guessing… he will. And the guys at Skeeter Boat Center will go out of their way to help.

Many times with electrical issues such as yours it will be intermittant just lik you described.

The intermittant issues are generally heat related. Meaning thet run ok till the parts get warm. And resistance tests will only show faults when parts are hot. But will look fine cold.

    Good luck. -Mark

I fought with a Evenirude with this problem for 2 years run great then would drop a cylinder, pick up a cylinder then start missing again. Turned out to be the coil pack and would only act up when the engine got warm.

Thanks Mark and Tom. Now that the motor is not running properly on a consistent basis I’ll try to see if I can get into where the plugs are for the pulser and the CDI and retest the resistance .I have the manual with all the specs and tolerances so I can go from there. I don’t know about running the motor with one cylinder down to warm things up if the tolerances check out when cold.
    I appreciate the input guys.
