I know there’s been a lot of discussions about how effective Thermacell units are/are not on skeeters, gnats, Black Flies and Horse/Deer Flies. But, do they effect the scent of a bait in a negative or positive way?

I try to not use any product that is “highly toxic to aquatic life”, especially on/near water.

If biting flies are you main nemesis, search blue solo cup sticky traps. Works incredibly well with zero toxicity. Last summer at camp was hell until I set up six cups for as many acres. By the next weekend the difference was incredible. I plan on getting a blue hard hat to sticky up for berry picking. If water levels remain high it could be another bad year.
I haven’t notice anything biting less except mosquito’s.
They work.
I have not notice any difference when fishing with or without a thermacell except I don’t get carried away by sketters when I have mine running.
I’ve never noticed any change. Perhaps if you are cooking your bait on the thermacell itself before using it you would, but otherwise I think this is a major stretch.
Thermacells do their job in the correct situations, but for me with fishing it doesn’t usually fit the weather (wind). I’d say 1 of every 5 fishing outings I have it is calm enough that thermacells work. When you’re out on the open water, it doesn’t take much of a breeze to render them useless.
We really haven’t used the thermacell in the boat. We use it on the back deck with great success on skeeters at least.
Deep woods off for skeeters & bugg’n for gnats is all I keep in the boat. Them damn horsefly’s don’t seem to care what I’ve got tho. They bite my ankles so bad I bleed, so I wear socks and pants more than I want to in the boat. I’ve noticed that once I get river water on my ankles, the flys just attack that much worse.
I found those things don’t even work on mosquitoes so I’m not convinced they’ll do anything for fishing.

They work but not immediately. We found we needed to fire them up 15 minutes or more before we figured the clouds of Mosquito’s came at night.

Ever go bear hunting in Manitoba in June ? Believe me, they work.

+1 I wouldn’t step foot in the BWCA during bug season without a thermacell.

Sounds like you are doing something wrong. Sure works great for me by the campfire and in the deer stand, goose hunting in the field in September. Works for a lot of other people too….
bought one last year and seemed to work pretty good! Still caught fish while using it too….

I also discovered mine in the BWCA and became SOLD. Again, not using it in the boat, but on land, I have had them work very well. Always keep one in my SUV now.

I would move. Works at my home on the deck and at the cabin.

You’re aware you need to switch out the pads about every 3-4 hours. (Or even sitting unused of a day or two.) A fresh pad and new butane is golden.

Is there a break-in period? The first 60 minutes it was useless. Followed by the next 60 minutes. Followed by another 60 minutes. All used in dead calm conditions in my yard or on my deck.
Works great in my screened in gazebo.

Send it to me with your extra pads and butane. I’ll do some testing over the summer and fall and let you know how that goes.
It is also possible that the pads were old… they get old even sitting on the shelf.

^ this. Get new sunscreen at the same time….the active ingredients in opened sunscreen products diminishes over the winter or long termed storage.
Gill you might be the first person I’ve ever heard that said they don’t work!
There was one year that the skeeters were very large. Even on windy evenings they would find the downstream side of my head and land on my ear. They didn’t work real good under those conditions.
I’m not going to go into the story of the FL business that sent me a necklace that would repel skeeters. They were so bad that year if you started talking you would inhale them. I gained a lot of weight that year.
Fired up the TCell and within 5-10 minutes they were mostly gone. We even caught fish!
I also discovered mine in the BWCA and became SOLD. Again, not using it in the boat, but on land, I have had them work very well. Always keep one in my SUV now.
Life changing experience for me: while in the BWCA, turn a thermacall on and drop it off at the latrine 15 min before you are ready to do the deed… Like I said, life changing.
Deep in a ravine, in Northern Manitoba sitting in a tree stand… over smelly bear bait… it attracts flies, mosquitoes and even bears. I ran a Thermocell… I sat virtually untouched by mosquitoes or anything flying for 3-4 hours, then “buzzzzzzzz” in my ear.. look down, out of butane. Quick change and back at it. Future trips, I would put one down on the stand, then about 2 hours later, start another one and set on the other side of me…. never was without protection after that move.. Without them, I would of had to been in full bug suit or I would have gone nuts. They work great for me.
Found an interesting article on smells affecting fish.
