I’m looking for advice on how to make a homemade scent drag. I looked in Cabelas the other day and they were out. So, I need to come up with something to use next week in SD. Any advice is appreciated.

I’m thinking any old rag would work, but I’m hoping someone might have a more clever idea.

instead of an “old rag” why not see if your wife/girlfriend has a new one you can use?
should absorb a lot of scent and some even come with strings attached.

As long as my wife and girlfriend don’t meet, I think I’ll be in the clear.

Old shoelace tied to your shoe with a small absorbent cloth tied to the end. Key is to freshen the scent several times mid-drag. Otherwise, any deer that might favorably respond to it will follow backwards – from less intense odor to more intense. For that reason, I’d look towards an aerosol or spray buck lure for convenience. I’m pretty sold on all the Deer Herd in a stick or deer herd in a bottle products. Carrying the stick with you and simply rubbing it on the rag should work.

I’ve had small bucks follow it in, but never anything quality. Who knows?

Not homemade and not sure on brand but really like the one that winds up and seals itself. Don’t like the hassle of ziplocks and don’t need to smell that smell in my truck

Hunter specialties makes a self containing system. I might have to try Gander one night this week on the way home. I agree, it’s not something you want smelling up your truck or tote.

Yep, Unscented tampon. There I said it. I came up with that like 10 years ago,. works great. and when you get up in your stand you chuck it in any pile of brush you can see close. I did this for years and NOT ONE deer followed the stink. Last year was the last straw when I had a 2 year old 8 point come in and stumble upon the tampon. He literally froze! locked his legs and looked like he was going to have a heart attack. Then proceeded to bolt at 100 mphs in the other direction or somewhere to get the heck otta there. SO Since then, I’ve been scent free so to speak.

I did a scent drag into my stand mid-week last rifle season. I used a homemade job with a shoelace/scent-wick and Special Golden Estrus. The following morning, there’s a snap of a twig and the rustle of some leaves – here comes a deer with its head down, following my drag. It followed it right to the shooting lane – a mature doe.

    Huh?

She sure made for some fine eating though.
