Wit a few older and younger members in our deer party I think it is about time to add a few permenent deer stand to our deer woods. I hope to get a few built and out to the wooods soon. Did a little research online and was not able to find much for plans ( at least not for free ) Not looking for anything fancy just a simple box stand – Possibly one with at least a roof or maybe even inclosed with sliding windows. Does anyone have any simple plans they care to share? What would be a rough estimate to build one? Am I better off just buying one of the molded plastic ones I see around ( They seem rather spendy ) Thanks in advance for all of you help and responses.

Keep in mind, I’m building this in SD. No trees, lots of wind.

I’m gonna wing it on my first one. I’ve got some 8×8 landscaping timbers that are 12 feet long. I’ll be burying them 36″ and using quickcrete around them. Plan to use 2×4 cross members on the posts.

I’ll then make a frame around the perimeter(likely before I concrete to get square). Once I have the frame(2×6’s), I’ll use deck hangers for the floor joyces(sp). I’ll sheet with green treated in the floor. I’ll probably put a very slight cant on the floor so moisture will run to a drain area. The floor will eventually get outdoor carpet to help quiet the stand.

I’ll then build my walls and hoist them up to the platform. I’ll set them and apply green treated to the exterior. I plan to have have shooting windows on all 4 sides.

For the roof, It will be a simple angle, one wall being higher than the other. I’ll shingle the shack and paint once completed.

My dad’s requirements are to give him room enough for both mom and him to sit together. They will use a buddy heater when necessary. What I haven’t figured out yet is how to access. Build steps up the side or a ladder that goes to a door in the floor. Likely steps as dad isn’t getting any younger and with diabetes he’ll need it to be as easy as possible.

Good luck and have fun with the project!!

The only piece of advice I can give you is to make sure if you elevate the stand, do so in a safe matter. I suggest using Elevators or some similar device for elevating stands. With our loved ones up there and especailly over time safety should be the # 1 issue and I have found these work really slick in doing that! Wood, Nails, Wind and Time can be a bad combo when you are 7, 10, 12, or 16 feet in the air in a box.

We have the Molded Plastic and a few wood ones. The Molded Plastic seems that they will “out live” the wood ones. The wood ones are nothing special just 4’x6′ built with no plan.

Here are a few pics of the Molded Plastic Ones! These sit right on 4×4 posts on topo fo the ground (not dug in or cemented in). We do have some wire anchored in to the ground to help hold her down, but they are heavy!

I have some pretty nice plans in a .pdf file. If anyone can tell me how to get that attached here, I’d be more than happy to.

Since my uncle makes the rounded plastic one in robs picture I will have to pimp that one. There is no doubt that these are going to outlive any wooden structure by decades or longer. Rob is right they are heavy and probably just a bit more cost up front but then you have to look at how long they will last.

Banks Outdoors is located in Cannon Falls, if you are close by there swing in and talk with them. They are also being sold at Fleet Farm this year and most displays were just put up. Any questions feel free to P.M. also.

Sorry to hyjack, since Rob had a picture I thought I would throw this in.

    Thanks Kooty!
I think this is going to be one of my projects over the winter. I’m not going to follow these plans exactly. But they looked to be a pretty good starting point….

I built the above mentioned stand last year with a few minor modifications. Here is the website link to that plan.

Here is 200yd doe kill from that stand (shot drifted a little and I spined her – not 100% proud of the shot placement, but you get the idea.) Stand worked well, other than needing to get better windows put in. It snowed a bunch prior to the hunt and was about 0 degrees, so the snow was crunchy inside the blind….

You can see the blind in this video. Sorry, I don’t have any still photos….

Here in Illinois we have come up with a quick and cheap solution to your problem. Since the crash of the hog market most farmers have given up on hogs and those that still raise them do so indoors. We have acquired either very cheap or free the old hog houses that are were very abundant. We are working on elevating some of them, but they work well on the ground with little modification.
