Just noticed this in the regs! You can use a .223 for deer starting this year. Plus the DNR got it right and now allows us to buy a Muzzleloader license as well as a gun license! And we can get a Statewide…meaning I can hunt at home in Hastings during the week, and Pine City or Ely on the weekends!

    New for 2008
    • The all-season deer and multi-zone buck licenses have been eliminated. Hunters can now purchase 3 stand-alone licenses (archery, firearm, and muzzleloader).

    • The traditional firearm zone licenses (1A, 2A, 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B) have been consolidated into two licenses types: Statewide Season Option A and Late-Season Season Option B. o Statewide “A”: Valid in any open area during the Statewide A Season, which begins November 8th, or o Season 3B: Valid only during the traditional 3B season in southeastern Minnesota, which begins November 22nd

    • Zone 4 has been eliminated and the permit areas have been moved to Zone 2 and renumbered. • All firearm deer hunters may now buy a muzzleloader license (including southeast 3B hunters).

    • The centerfire cartridge restriction has been simplified. All centerfire cartridges .220 or greater are legal for big game hunting. NOTE – The Rifle/Shotgun line has NOT changed.

    • Hunters no longer need to validate their deer license at the time of kill. The site tagging requirements have not changed, only the license validation portion.

    • A person 10 or 11 years old may hunt big game provided they are in direct supervision of a parent or guardian.

    • The deer baiting regulations have been clarified.

No just want to make sure everyone sees that and not think they can use a rifle in the shot gun zone

I am not happy that they did away with the all season license, now if a guy wants to hunt all three seasons bow, shot gun, & muzzle loader it will cost you more $$$$ because you will have to buy all three licenses

My point is that for $26 (Not $80 something or whatever the Statewide was…) I can hunt up north on the weekend, or Hastings after work. Now each license is $26, and the hunter can decide how many they want.

For the guy who just hunts the gun season only this is a good deal for them

Steve, It would’ve cost you the same under the old regs. buying the “ALL SEASON” or were you including antlerles permits that came with it?

Right for $78 with the All Season you got one buck tag and two Managment tags good for all three seasons.

You can still shoot a doe with your bow…you can still shoot a doe with your rifle…you can still shoot a doe with your muzzleloader…or a buck with one of them. Therefore you have two management tags basically, right?

I am with steve on this one and its just easier.

When your in bow season you would want to use one of your management tags because if you use your regular license to tag a doe then you can’t shoot a buck. So if you where to shoot a doe in the first weekend lets say. Then tag it with your reg. license and then you get a chance at a buck in December well you can’t shoot it with your bow. This being the point the reg license is an either sex license but the management is a doe only. So having management tags are a deal.

Chris, Steve is saying, if you shoot a buck or a doe, with your regular bow license, your done. Unless it is a management or intensive harvest tag (that is purchased additionally to the reg license, 2 of these used to be included in the All Season) then it could only be a doe. You may still party hunt, but are done tagging. Same goes for rifle, you don’t get 1 tag with each, unless you buy mgmt or inten harvest tags, you get 1 deer statewide. For example, in Ripley, I can use up to 2 mgmt tags, which I have to buy. If I were to tag any animal in Ripley, buck or doe with my regular archery tag, I am done in the state, unless party hunting Glad they simplified things

No. Not according to the Regs for 2008. Each license “Stands Alone.” And it gives bag limits for each. Show me where it says 1 buck per year like it used to.

    NEW FOR 2008:

    License types:
    • Regular Archery: May take one deer of either sex without applying in the lottery.

    • Regular Firearms: May take a buck in the deer area but must apply for an either-sex permit through the lottery system if interested in taking an antlerless deer. The application deadline is Sept. 4, 2008. If successful in the lottery, the bag limit is one deer of either sex.

    • Regular Muzzleloader: May take one deer of either sex without applying in the lottery if they do not buy a firearm license. Hunters who purchase both a firearm and muzzleloader license must apply in the lottery. Either-sex permits are valid during the firearm and muzzleloader seasons; however, hunters must have a valid license for that season.

So your saying you can take 3 bucks ???!!! I know for fact, 1 is the limit in Mn. I would bet my season on that right there. I fired off some emails to the DNR today. I believe after you tag a buck, you are limited to antlerless and it better be in a managed area, where you were successful in the lottery or in intensive harvest, where you bought the extra tag. I will report what I hear back again tomorrow. I am keeping Suellen on her toes again….
