Boat/dock security

I posted/whined last week about getting my rods and tackle stolen out of my boat while it was on our boat lift on Sibley Lake in Pequot Lakes. They hit two neighbors, too. Pretty sure they came by boat. Lived there for 20 yrs w/o a problem. Moving forward, I lock the boat lockers every night, take the keys out, and remove the electronics. Why they left my Helix, I cant figure out. I had a motion detector light that died a couple years ago. I will get another one. Ive researched security cameras like Arlo and Google has one, I believe. They are probably waiting for me to re-stock. Does the camera really do any good? If you see 2 pricks taking your stuff, but cant ID them does it matter? Any other tips for preventing this in the future? Thanks for any ideas. An aluminum bat to break a couple ribs sounds good.

As much motion lights as possible. If you can’t ID the pricks from camera, the bat or something else would work.

Utube “boat alarms you never knew existed”
Guy has some pretty nice alarms set up in his boat. Hopefully you can run fast enough with the bat when they get scared off.

I did watch that YouTube video last night with motorcycle alarms. Someone mentioned a baby monitor.

I bought a driveway sensor for staying at hotels. Haven’t used it “for real” yet, but testing it seems to work great

If your WiFi reaches the dock you could look into a doorbell style camera that alerts you

Can you rig a drop net from inside the canopy of the boat lift and have it drop down when they set of an alarm.
Sorry I watch to many cartoons these days with my kid.

A friend of mine has a bar that locks that goes across the boat that goes over the rod locker. No idea where he got it.

I looked into that. I have an aluminum boat. Right now they are only made for glass boats. I like the net idea.

I’d get a few of those tracking tiles and put them in some of your stuff. It won’t help from the stuff getting stolen, but it might help determine where it went and who took it.

You won’t like this idea but……

The only way to prevent theft is to have nothing to steal. Empty the boat every night. Big pain I know, but it’s the only sure fire way. To make this easier rig up a cart or wagon to haul all your stuff in one trip. Think of a wagon or one of those carry out carts a grocery store has. Load all the tackle, rods, electronics on the cart and wheel it away. Of course you don’t need to worry about life jackets, cushions ect. Just the tackle. This will also keep you from hauling so much crap around also. grin

Like I said, you won’t like the idea but….

Post a picture of your rod locker, not sure why you think what is offered only works on ‘glass hulls? Give us a chance to look at your particular set up and offer a solution.

Amazon Blink Camera has no subscription fees and (limited) free cloud storage…but needs wifi. In the dark, it could be very difficult to get a good pic of the person but you’d get a great shot of their boat numbers!

Look it and cover it if possible, otherwise, as suggested, remove everything!

There is a motion activated system which I can’t think of the name but when the boat is jostled or moves slightly it makes a car alarm type alert. I’ll try and find the name. That’s the one I was looking into a year or so ago.
