I remember when this first happened in 2011. Nice work to everyone involved to bring this case to a close! There is no punishment that would ever be enough for this woman that we could give her. Justice will finally be served on her finale judgment day.

Disgusting! As you said, there is no punishment that fits this crime. I do have to wonder however. How did they obtain this DNA? Was this yet another scenario of someone submitting their DNA to one of these online companies?

I seen on ch4 news that they got a feminine hygiene product out of the garbage. How they got there I don’t know.

How did they obtain this DNA?

They got her DNA from her trash. Hope they got a search warrant.

    ===========================================================

    Timeline:
The Winona County Sheriff’s Office announced an arrest in connection with the case on Thursday.

DNA technology provided by a nonprofit led investigators to a woman believed to be the baby’s biological mother, according to the criminal complaint.

The nonprofit, Firebird Forensics Group, then used DNA samples from the baby in an effort to find possible relatives with the help of voluntary DNA samples gathered by law enforcement.

That information led to a possible match between a mother and the baby. In May 2023, the DNA led investigators to Jennifer Nichole Baechle, 43, of Winona.

The criminal complaint that Winona County deputies then requested a DNA sample from Baechle, who then retained a lawyer.

Deputies then got samples of Baechle’s DNA by going through her trash and sent the samples to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Investigators then determined the infant found in 2011 “could be the biological child” of Baechle, the complaint states.

Winona County deputies then served a search warrant to collect Baechle’s DNA on March 19, 2024. Charging documents state the lab results showed the baby’s genetic results are “570,000 times more likely to occur in a biological child” of Baechle than someone unrelated to Baechle.

The complaint states the lab results show “very strong evidence to support” a biological mother-daughter relationship between Baechle and Baby Angel.

Firebird Forensics previously helped the FBI catch Joseph DeAngelo, who was otherwise known as the Golden State Killer.

IDK my wife watches a lot of cop shows and if its in the trash outside the home then it seems to be fair game. -)
Very detailed information I sure hope it sticks.

Not saying one was needed. Just hope they took the time to get one. The way prosecutors fail to charge and judges/juries fail to convict over frivolous details in this day is ridiculous.

Most states have established precedence that DNA on trash is considered abandoned and can be collected without a warrant. Some however do state that running DNA analyses on that trash is not permitted without a warrant.

I can all but guarantee given the following this case had and will now have again, that the best experts in law were involved to be sure everything was done by the book.

As much as everyone wants a “pound of flesh”, I cannot see this going to trial. This will follow the other 95% of court cases that are plead out. I support the full weight of the law being levied against this person, but hopefully the investigators, family, public, taxpayers, etc. don’t have to be drug through the hoopla of a giant jury trial to get a harsh sentence.

Per my CSI FW, if it’s on the curb it’s fair game without a warrant. Apparently they get a lot of evidence that way. Since she’s an investigator and not a lawyer, take that with a grain of salt.

I think that goes for when even all T’s are crossed and I’s dotted and they still let them get off with a slap of the wrist.
I am sure glad there is closure here hopefully.

But who is the father? DNA can’t match to him?

Yes, the trash would need to be set out for collection.

What a messed up world. It was confirmed today that the suspect is a mother of two kids, and an Adjunct Professor at Winona State University who was teaching a lower level English class for the University on contract, and had been since 2022.

Wow! I was an English Minor at WSU, but way before her time.

I remember the case but cant remember the details, was it ever determined if the baby was drowned or was she deceased before she was thrown in the river?

    ^not sure on those specifics.

It will be interesting to see if a father is mentioned/discovered as a result of the investigation.

I just don’t know how you can get away with something like this for as long as she did? I mean you have to have friends and family who know you’re pregnant, right? Then you have the baby and all of the sudden it’s gone? How do you begin to explain away something like that? and then there’s a news story at the same time of this baby found in the river? Maybe it’s one thing if you’re a recluse or live your life on the run, but she led a fairly public life in the area. There had to be people who knew this whole time and protected her and that makes it even more sick.

Sadly, she could have told people she had an abortion… then its’s not a dead baby… no story, nobody cares coffee
