In-laws pontoon went in for the season today and the motor started off sounding like this:

    Motor Noise

FIL says motor has oil in it, gas is a couple months old. Didn’t have this sound when it was pulled last fall.

Any ideas of what to check first? I won’t be up until Memorial Day weekend, plan to change oil and filter and see if we notice any change.

what do plugs look like? I would start there. Doesn’t sound like it is hitting on all cylinders to me.

    I’d check compression too.

With no better hearing than I have listening to a video it sounds to me like the lower unit upper drive bearing is out of it due to lack of oil.
If you are not seeing metal in the engines oil or oil filter, remove the lower unit drain plug and look for metal there.

I wish I could get a better listen, anyway you can get a video next to the motor from a different boat next to it???

The water pump looks like it’s still intact.

Am pretty much deaf in my left ear and can kinda hear out of the right one, almost sounds like the starter gear got loose and is hitting off the flywheel?

Appreciate all the suggestions, I’ll pull it in two weeks and give it a good run through. Hopefully it’s something simple, if not I’ll have another video update.

Iowaboy – I can run a 2nd engine on muffs next to it on land in a couple weeks.

Definitely a metallic clanging, per my FIL it’s happening in gear and when in neutral (shown in video). To me it almost sounds like what Basseyes said, with some metal on metal contact with the flywheel.

I’m no help on the motor but after watching the vid I watched your 49.5” croix ice sturgeon one. Tac(onite) is a pretty cool name for a German shepherd. Love the way he stares down the hole at full attention the entire time lol. Cool pup.

    Good luck with the outboard.
