Pool #3 6/24

Having not fished Pool #3 since early May I was eager to get up there and try my luck. I met up with Jay Schuur (Stickboy from the site) at Evert’s early in the morning with hopes of getting some good fishing in and getting off the water before the temps skyrocketed.

The plan for the day was to troll and cast crankbaits and fish areas very fast to cover as much water as possible. We were targeting current breaks in areas we have had luck in the past. There is still a good bit of current on the pool so the fish were definitely sticking close to the breaks. Our best areas had structure, both wood and rocks, on them.

We got to the first area and I caught a 19 incher on one of my first few casts. Not to be outdone Stick sticks this pig just moments later. This 27.5 incher crushed a craw color crankbait. After fishing this spot for a bit longer it was time to move on.

Soon after settling into the second spot I get into this 23 inch walleye. It fell for a red craw crank. I believe this was a dollar fish, wasn’t it Stick????? Soon after Stick pulled this 22 and 23 inch (I think) combo. This seemed to be the way it went all morning, I’d catch one fish and Stick would catch two.

It turned out that the brown craw was the hot bait for the day as Stick definitely had the hot bite this morning. I don’t believe he left that color pattern all morning. We did also get action from firetiger and I believe the pearl white got hit a time or two.

Here is a picture of me with another low/mid 20 inch fish.

On a side note, I noticed some mayflies coming to the surface. It won’t be long now and we will be covered in the little buggers.

Born and raised on the Mississippi I learned the joy of fishing at a very early age. I mainly walleye fish but will chase anything in the water. I fish the river and Mille Lacs frequently.

  1. It was good seeing you and Stick out and about Sunday!
We ran into you just as LeRoy was busy knocking a 20 incher of his kid’s line with the net!

That was funny!!!!!! He looked none too happy about it!!!!

We would have fished there a little longer but I was getting claustrophobic. I hate being around that many boats.

  3. Great report Lenny. I sure enjoyed my first expierence on Pool 3 Saturday with Scott. There sure are some hogs in there. We came up with a nice 28 3/4 off of a clam bed. Those beds sure eat a lot of cranks but produce some nice fish. We did have a couple of other nice hook ups there too but had them come undone.

  4. Thanks for the pool 3 report Lenny. That pool is on my agenda for next week sometime……..maybe even this weekend.

What was your best wingdam crank?

  5. Good report Lenny but the early in the morning part might be stretching it a little. Wasn’t much moving EARLY Sunday morning at Evert’s. Pool 3 is on my agenda also but first I have 9 days on Oahe coming up starting Friday.

You Pool 4 guys be sure to get your Pool # permission slips signed by the lock master when you come through!
    Dustin keeps forgetting.

Chris I don’t know if you are aware of this or not; but Dustin is getting around the whole permission requirement by launching at Diamond Bluff!

I think this needs to be investigated further! Perhaps it should be brought before the Steering Committee?

The good old craw patterns were by far the best producers.

Nice work fellas. Gonna have to try fishing 3 next time up as well.

EVERYONE KNOWS FOR BIGGER FISH YOU NEED TO STAY ON POOL 4!

  11. Nice report Lenny. Those are some good looking fish!
I miss Pool 2 a bit each time I see a wingdam bite report pop up!

  12. I hear ya! I love fishing multi-species in cool places. Last week I was in Canada fishing walleyes and smallmouth. Fishing was good but not great for size. So I get back home and my buddy who went with us from Washington state wanted one more fishing excursusion.

We head out to Pool 2, fishing wingdams caught a 26 and 24 inch walleye. Both bigger then anything we got in Canada! Isnt that why the sport is so much fun.. unexpected anticipation.

Off to Quetico next week for a smallmouth trip, quess the river will have to wait.
