Bass Still on the Feed! Not Just Walleye!

Hello all. I know we all have extremely busy schedules during this time of year, but if you can slip in a few hours on a SE Wisconsin lake the experience could be priceless. My buddy Dustin Smith (BassHog) and I went out on a local lake in his backyard and caught nearly 30 largemouths and at least 4 big northerns in just 4 hours. Here is one of the few toads we caught…

When we started out around 9:00 a.m. the water temps were struggling to reach 43*. The bass were holding near the deeper structure and/or cover (as expected this time of year). Dustin did a great job feeling out the early bite by slowing down his retrieve and caught a 4 pounder shortly after we started.

During the next couple hours we proceeded to catch at least 20 bass and a few big northerns by targeting deeper fish with cranks colored mostly or partially white, blue, orange, or red in them. These fish were definitely huddling up in pods. We would fish 200 yards of bank without a bite and then smack 5 or more within 10 feet of each other.

During the last hour the fish started to absolutely inhale our baits. It is a beautiful thing when you can rip a crank in 43.5* water and catch bass with the head of the bait buried in their mouth! This fish was only 13 or so inches but shows how aggressive they were.

  1. Dave,

Great report! You’ve proven they are still out there and biting! It’s a mater of adjusting to the conditions.

  2. Great report and nice pics Dave

Brings back memories of when I lived down/over that way The lakes in Waukesha and Jefferson county were always good for pike fishing this time of year. There were times when the bass bite was better than the pike bite

  3. Those are some great fish! Thanks for sharing Dave!!

I guess I should dust off the Bass tackle and give’er a try one more time.

    Thanks again Dave!!!

  4. Dave,

Nice report. Sure looks like fun!
I have a couple lakes back home that are plump full of some dandy largemouth. I wish I could find time to get back there right now and fish them.
    Thanks for sharing.
