Lil’ Hale with Dad on Spirit Lake

What a great day to spend on the water.Had great weather and calm conditions which made the trip even better.I’ve been very busy with guide trips and fishing with friends so this trip was very special for me.With his two older brothers busy with baseball season it was time for the Lil’ bro to get out with Dad and have some fun. This was a no pressure trip with only Cade fishing.I would get stuff set-up but if we had a bite it was all his.My goal was for him to have fun,and maybe he could even boat a few fish. Here is his 1st eye of the year.

Cade was getting a bit bored with trolling so off to the shallows to fish for active fish.It wasn’t long and he caught this nice perch. The perch bite has been good the last week on Spirit.

Cade was active and had many bites. He caught a few and was having a great time.Dad was proud of him and the great job he done on the water today.
Ever so often hard work on the water is paid off with a few nice fish. Can you say bull gill? Cade connected on 3 of the biggest gills I have ever seen out of Spirit Lake. These guys would even take drag out and Cade had his hands full with them.Check this guy out.

Cade wanted a smallie so off to the rocks for a final area of the day.I really wanted him to connect with one of the best fighting fish in freshwater. He ended up catching 3 smallies and man was it fun.I didn’t help him, only to net his fish.I wish I could have had it on camera as it was super fun to wacth him try to mussle these fish in.We even got a few jumps, that really made the fight special.
We fished for 5 hours and Cade wasn’t happy when we left for the Resort. He did a great job on the water and I’m very proud of him.I would be lying if I say it didn’t bring a tear to my eye when he said this to me.”Thanks for taking me fishing Dad”.
Here he is with his first smallie of the day.

  1. Last pic, this guy wasn’t very big but what a fight. The water was crystal clear so we got to see those smallies going nuts under water.

  2. Ryan,

    Those gils are huge
I can just see it now, the sticker on the window reads
    “Cade’s Guide Service”.
You, my man, are raising some good sticks

  3. Great report Ryan! Glad to hear you got the boys out for some fun. Nothing better than watching their faces light up when they catch fish.

  4. Great job Cade That’s what life is all about….those pics are priceless. those sure look like some bull gills hey they look big enough for a master angler award or at least an Iowa big fish award. awesome

  5. Glad to see you boys got out on the water. VERY glad to see Cade tied into some bruiser gills. Nothing like Dad and son spending quality outdoors time together. It just doesn’t get any better than that.
BTW Ryan, bought Austin a new set of clubs for his Birthday. Went to the local course and to play a quick 9. He is O.K. off the tee, a little better off the fairway and rough. But I have to tell you, right now, his swing is perfect for bunker play. This is the truth…..he is the best bunker player I have ever played with…..BAR NONE! It is the doggonest thing you have ever seen. He is out and on the green EVERY time. An example? O.K. 40 yards out, in the bunker, one stroke and he is within 5 feet. 2 other gentleman were playing along and not really giving Austin any notice. He hits it into this fairway bunker and they say, “Oh, to bad, it ran into the bunker.” Austin replies, “Just the way I like it.” So these fellas laugh and think Austin is just funnin’. When he stick it to 5 feet out of that bunker they both stood there in shock. Neither one of them could say a word until the next tee. And suddenly they took a very BIG interest in Austin’s golf game.LOL!!!!!
Again, glad to see you to boys got out! Looking forward to returning a favor in Nov.!!

BTW….We need to hook and get a date for you and the other kid Hale!!

  8. Thanks for the report Ryan!!!
I know what you mean about the tear thing. I took my 3 yr old out crappie fishing earlier this year. Showed her how to cast her little dora rod and reel.

Not long after casting out a bobber with a pink crappie jig out she had one on. “Dad Dad it’s shacking” she yelled
I told her you got a fish reel it in. I helped her get the fish into the boat and thats it.
Being a young father words can’t explain the joy that I felt. Man it’s awesome
