IGL’s recap,late May early June

Running the Resort, guide trips, and fishing with great friends has kept me very busy.Fishing has been very good somedays, others I have struggled.
This report will cover the last 2 weeks.I’ll start the report with this past week-end.Chuck Ungs(Chuckles)and Scott Cabalka(ducks for me)got into town late Sat. night. After catching up on things we headed to a wild game feed that another member from IDA was putting on.Dave Horton(Emover)and his family hold a game feed every year and it was a fun time.We got to talk with Dave, eat some great food, and talk shop of course.Dave’s son Derek gave us some very good smoked deer sausage.Dave please tell your boy we loved it.
We hit Spirit Lake very early on Sunday morning and it didn’t take long for Scott to connect with this nice smallie.

We didn’t have to best fishing but manage to catch fish and have a blast. It was fun to talk fishing/hunting/and nature with Chuck and Scott.Between talking we did get a few keeper eyes.We got the fish on both slip-bobber set-ups and trolling bouncers/spinners.Here is Chuck with a nice 3 fish limit from Spirit Sunday morning.

Sunday afternoon we hit West O. for a few hours so Scott could show off and catch bass.He had the bass dialed in for a short time and it was very fun to watch him.Scott was casting soft plastics into the docks. Here he is with a nice West O bass.

Monday morning found us very early again but our slip-bobber bite was gone.So out to the basin to troll crankbaits and leadcore. We caught fish and manage a few more keepers. We also worked planer boards shallow but that did not produce for us.Chuck and Scott both wanted to learn how use boards and I hope they came out of it with learning a few new things.Chuck with a legal leadcore eye that was caught in “Chucks groove”.
It was one of those week-ends that I wish I could do over and over again.Chuck and Scott are about as good as friends as a guy could ever ask for.We really had a great week-end with lots of fishing and even more laughs.Scott had us laughing so hard a few times in the boat we had tears running down our face. All I can say is that I really have to go watch Caddyshack this week.
I can’t wait to get out with you guys again.I hope we can make this an annual fishing trip.

  1. Ryan, I had a great time! It was one of those trips that fishing actually ended up secondary. Not because of lack of catching fish…cause we caught a good number of eyes, lots of bass, throw in a northern, a drum and a muskie follow…….but because of the good friends that occupied the weekend together. Learning, laughing, fishing and relaxing……it was a fantastic trip. Just wish it hadn’t end so soon. You were right about Chuck’s Groove. Not easy to find but the fish were there. Would also love to make this an annual trip. We’ll have to try and make it work. Looking forward to having you over this way this fall. Hope to return the hospitality you showed Chuck and myself. A trip I will remember forever Ryan!
And remember……Gungula, gungula. You got that going for you…..which is nice.

    Thanks buddy!!!!

  2. Scott, you got me laughing again .Tired? From what, the lack of sleep? I sure hope you guys got the power nap in when you got home?
Here are a extra pics from the last few weeks.

  3. Dave had his limit of 3 eyes in about 30 minutes. He was casting cranks in a few feet of water and the fish were on a great bite.We also chased skis and northern for a awhile and he caught his first northern ever.
On another note.Later in the day I went out with Scott Reed of Berkley and we put together a 2 man limit of 6 keeprs eyes.It was nice to get out with Scott and even catch some fish this time
    Dave with another eye.

  6. For my trip yesterday I took out Bob Wood and Tim O’Leary from the Fort Dodge area.Bob and I have talked for many years but this is the first time we’ve met.Bob is a moderator on the IO site and goes by Big Jake.Another great group of people I got to spend time with in the boat.We found out that we had a common thread in fishing/hunting and the love of “The Blues”.Fishing was a little slow but we caught enough to keep it interesting.Tim with a nice West O bass,he sure caught a bunch of bass.

  7. Bob Wood is one of those guys that is truely amazing. The last 25 years he has spent in a wheelchair after a surgery on his back. This hasn’t stopped Bob from getting out and doing everything that can be done-and more. How many of you get out and fish as much as Bob,not many. How many of you shoot deer,Bob does each year. What about turkey? Bob did that this spring also.A great person who loves nature.Bob you were super to fish with, and make sure you bring that lucky Irish guy with you again next time we can get out.
Here is Bob with a bull gill.He did a great job on the gills, even caught 3 or 4 of the neatest looking redears you’ll ever see.

  8. Hey!! That bass looks familiar and so does the back ground. LOL!!!!

No power nap Ryan. Just hit the hay a little early. But Chuck and I did get a little shut eye on the way home. Worked out O.K. but I think next time we’ll try not to do it at the same time.
    Just kiddin’.
Actually the ride home wasn’t bad at all. We stopped at God Fathers for the buffet and headed for home. Pulled into Mantown about 3:40. Austin said he wants to come along next time so he can wrestle those carp. LOL!!!!

  9. Ryan,
Nice report Those are some super pics! Don’t you understand you’ll go crazy if you work all the time, even if some of it is fishing

Thanks for the kind words, glad you had a good time. I’ll be sure and tell Derek about the sausage, it is good, isn’t it.

It was great to finally meet Scott, and to catch up with all of you. Sounds/looks like the fishing and weekend went well

Looking forward to spending some time on the water with you one of these days. Too bad it’s a 4 hour drive to get there

  10. Great report Ryan! I really enjoyed my time with you up there yesterday. Beautiful day on the water with a great friend. I am pleased that I can relate to Chuck and ducks good time myself. I can now say “I’ve been fishing with Ryan Hale and it was a great pleasure. I recommend it to all for a great time fishing!” Tim is a good luck charm and I’ll bring him again. He had a great time too.

Congrats Chuck and duck! Thanks for everything Ryan. You are a fishing buddy for life.

  11. Glad to see that everyone has been catching some fish I need to get back up there to catch some more fish. That looks like a nice gill Bob. Those perch sure look tasty also.

  12. It was great meeting you also Dave. And that sausage was awesome. Tell your son he did a great job with it. Your hospitality was fantastic!! Not many places can you go as a stranger and be treated like a friend. Thanks for the food it really hit the spot. Chuck and I were very impressed with you and your clan. Great bunch of folks you are!

  13. Good job on the fish everyone – Ryan – don’t be giving out the gps coordinates of Chuck’s trough to everyone – they will catch too many eyes and the population will drop off! WE had a blast – my belly hurts from laughing so hard and I think I am a few brain cells shorter from not being able to catch my breath from the laughter.

Folks – if you haven’t been out for Ryans hospitality and to visit the very nice little resort there you are really missing out – don’t forget a good guide is there close by as well – Ryan knows where the fish are!

Dave – Dereks venison rocked – best I’ve ever had… we really enjoyed ourselves there at the party – not sur ethe owls in the neighborhood will recover soon though.

by the way Ryan – I don’t think the heavy stuff will come down for a while yet…!
