Miss. River Pool 11 3-25,26, 2006

Got away this weekend to hit the Miss. It turned out to be well worth the trip with a lot of respectable walleyes, big saugers, and a real trophy eye.

That hog was oly 27.5″ but weighed in at 9’14” on the rapala digital scale. She was caught in 8 ft of water right before dark on a ( I hate to admit it ) jig and minnow. Trevor’s caught two bigger than this in his life, but it was bigger than any I’ve caught. Congrats!

We also got into some nice saugers Saturday like this one. It took a lot of patience though. The fishing was really pretty slow for us this day. All they wanted on Saturday was minnows, and when we finally submitted to it, we caught a lot of fish.

Sunday we found a lot more aggressive fish as long as we kept moving around and not fishing the same spots or near the crowds. One here and one there. Chartreuse pepper ringies were very consistent, but electric blue produced some viscious strikes and many other colors accounted for a fish or two. Experimenting with dragging and jigging and in combination was pretty interesting. We caught almost all of our fish with a large angle in our line to the bottom. lifting upstream and dropping downstream almost horizontally was what the fish were willing to accept from us.

My boss and walleye lover, Walter, got in on a few nice saugers too. Impressive fish for a two time river fisherman.

  1. Nice fish Andy Nice to see you sharing your knowledge with others as well. I bet you all had a great time on the water. How did you like the dragging? It was pretty slow for us this weekend so it is cool to see some piggies being caught

  2. Great fish Andy, , Where did you launch from? How does the baypoint ramp look?
Was there alot of boats on the river today?

  3. Great report Andy…
Looks like I should have been fishing with you rather than at the MWC tournament…

    Trevor….you are the walleye master!!

  4. Andy, nice fish.Reading these Miss. River reports sure helps me until our season opens in May.
Pool 11,would that be around Clinton,or is it North of it???

  5. Nice fish guys! I’ve been to the river twice, and still haven’t gotten the boat off the trailer . Pool 4 better look out next weekend, I have to make up for lost time.

  6. Dave, sorry to hear you’re having boat trouble.

Good luck at RW w/ Host!!!! Prime time, man! I think yu finally hit one on the head…. Tell Chuckles he owes me 46 cents for the ringworms! HA!

    Peace OUT

  7. Awesome fish Andy. Thanks for the report and pics. That is one FAT mamma! Ryan, pool 11 is north of the dam at Dubuque, up to Guttenburg I believe.

  8. Lol, I’ll tell Chuck that. Maybe you should use that .46 cents for a downpayment on a custom rod from him? I’ll put up some pics of my latest one when I get back from R/W. I haven’t got a peek yet, but everybody that has says its a beauty!

  9. I’m sure we could work that kind of a deal out too. Of course shared information is always difficult to put a price on. Then again – on the water pricing is rarely so reasonable as 46 cents for three of something close to what is working for a guy after they lose their last one too!!!! Nice to have met you guys and shared some things on the river…

Dave – we need to rub the slime from a double digit eye on that new rod when we get up there to break it in properly – it always pays off – that Loomis I caught the sheba on last year was broken in by a 27″ eye on Winni in the first 5 minutes I was fishing with it… that kind of luck sticks in the graphite fibers

  10. Trevor got a good one!!! Oh, man… I was joking around on the payment stuff and hope you took it that way… Dave is talking about an SC4 LT69MLXF rod in that cobalt blue /American Tackle holographic guides and tennessee handle I am building for him – it’s very sharp and everyone that’s seen it has been raving but I’ve been holding out and haven’t sent Dave pix yet… he’s hoping to have a double digit eye on it with James on Friday I think… the St. Croix is gonna be up for the challenge! Really Andy – enjoyed talking with you and Trevor – you guys are great and class acts all the way. Hope you guys keep up the great catches and reports. Tight lines! Chuckles

  11. It’s been a little while since I’ve been out Andy (last Friday). Planning to head out tommorrow with my Uncle. He is pushing 80, and has been chomping at the bit for warmer weather so he can try his hand at the walleyes. I am in the process of converting him to the fineries of walleye fishing. He’s been a bass guy most of his life! Never to old to see the light I guess. With near 60 temps forecast, I should be able to keep him comfortable. Hopefully I get him on some fish. That will be my big challenge!
