Finally was able to make it to my wood duck houses today. Started cleaning out the first one and there were two rodent looking babies inside. They were about 5-6 inches pink with grey fur and noticeable tails. Was pretty surprised! My kids were with me so we debated what to do.

Any ideas what these things were???

Agree squirrels. If they are that big probably greys.

We had flying squirrels move in to a box. I was sure glad I tapped on the box before getting up the ladder and opening the box. A whole family came out when I tapped on it with the ladder.

I get mice in my bird houses. Got pics? Either way it’s a wood duck box so evict them and put in your fresh wood chips.

No pics. I was kinda surprised by the deal and they were squeaking and my kids of course were concerned about them. I convinced them it would be best to put them in a cardboard box and relocate them snug in their nest back in the woods. Way too big to be mice, I think you guys are right about squirrels. It was a first for me guess I should start tapping on the boxes first too!

I was greeted once by about a dozen stings to the face when cleaning out a wood duck house. I now hit them hard with something before opening them up.

Agreed that it is likely squirrels.

I have a bigger heart for squirrels over mice. I doubt I would destroy them if squirrels. For sure not if flying squirrels.

Flying Squirrels are really cool. I saw a dead once up close it had the softest fur. I’m not sure how common they are these days. Its been a LOT of years since I saw my last one. I think they tend to be more nocturnal than most other squirrels. I’m not looking forward to cleaning out my Bluebird and Wren houses. I know there is Mice in one of the Wren houses for sure. I hate tossing any baby animal, but if there are baby mice in any of the houses, They are being tossed. I enjoy watching the wrens to much to let the mice have the home.

we have at least 2 flying squirrels up at the cabin……..yes there are totally nocturnal. you may see them at dusk…..not often. they like our sunflower feeders.

at one point we had 6 at one time that i could see!!!! waytogo we d o have various birdhouses up and based on the direction they seem to come in to the feeders……i’m pretty sure there in the birdhouses………and i’m OK with that!!

I had flying squirrels in my house attic one time. They would crawl down the insulation in the walls and you could hear him scratching at night. I ended up using a small have a heart trap that I had to alter because those things can get out of just about anything and actually had to use those radio tip up beepers on the trap door so that I could get up to the attic fast enough to catch them when they were still in the trap. I ended getting about six of them out of the attic that Winter, not very cool when they get into the walls like that.

My parents live not far from you–last year, my dad had a flying squirrel nest in one of their bird houses, so they’re around!
