Any of you have any recommendations on a good source for a reman long block for a 2016 Volvo? Friend of mine is saying Jasper, but I wonder if you can only get those through a certified installer and need to have them install.

Where to buy a long block

Honestly our luck at my shop with reman engines has been terrible recently. I’ve gotten 1 from Iron Clad that was junk out of the crate and knocking like crazy, waited 2 months for a replacement. Just last week I installed a new 6.0 chev from Tri-Star and when doing the break in oil change found that they installed a damaged drain plug into damaged oil pan threads on my new engine. We had a Jasper with a misfire that ended up being incorrect valves installed in one cylinder.
The problem, LKQ Corp is monopilizing the industry , they own Jasper, Tri-Star, Ironclad, and many more automotive parts brands and suppliers.
As this happens quality control and pride go out the window.
My advice, get a used engine from a reputable yard (if you’re in the metro I can recommend a couple) or buy from Volvo if possible.May 8, 2025 at 7:39 am #2334664My first thought was a used engine, but these had an issue with the rings that led to excessive oil consumption. This is the case with ours and I f’d up and let it go too long without checking the oil level. My fear is that we get a used engine with the same problem. What really bites is that Volvo was aware of the ring problem and had a program to repair, but you had to be getting your oil changes at a dealer and they would do an oil consumption test. Of course, they didn’t notify anybody of this and I didn’t find out about it until it was over.

You’re not the only one with this dilemma. I see it all the time with GM,Chrysler, and Honda engines too. Unfortunately going used is a gamble. Like you said, there’s a known issue with all of those engines. Good yards offer a warranty with labor coverage that can benefit you should your used engine have issues.
If you decide to look into a Volvo engine or a reman from elsewhere you should find out if the ring issue has been remedied on that engine or if you’re buying the same troubled design again. It would hurt even more to buy a new one and then still have an issue.
Either way, it’s likely you will still have a vehicle that you have to check the oil on constantly.
Sometimes it’s better to cut your losses and walk away from it. Without knowing your specific situation is hard to say what’s best for you.May 8, 2025 at 8:52 am #2334680I had a 2009 BMW 535 that lost an engine. Car was in great shape so we looked for a long block…this was a few years ago. The cost for a reman long block was like $17k. The car wasn’t worth that much so I sold it to a BMW mechanic who could rebuild the motor.
Volvo parts aren’t as expensive as BMW but I have to believe they are spendy. Might be time to walk away unless you really have a good reason to keep it.

Thanks for the suggestion! Looks like they would have at least a decent budget option.

Any guesses which brands I recommended when we bought the Volvo?
