Going to replace the water pump on my 2018 Merc 150. Never done this before and have watched a few YouTubes. Some say to put engine in forward and others say neutral. What is best? It looks like the only tricky part is sliding everything back together. Any tips will be appreciated. Not a mechanic by any stretch but good at following directions.

It’s really easy to drop the lower unit, and reinstall. I pop it in forward gear before sliding out. Just don’t spin the shift shaft when you take it out. Sliding it back in use a conch strap so you can line the slides up of the shafts and it will slide right back in. And when taking out the impeller make sure to note what way the star or impeller blades are turned.

Forward gear, makes life stress free when reinstalling, too easy for that shift shaft to slip into forward and cause shift problems if the controller is in neutral.

Agree with the forward. Did my 90 4 stroke and didn’t know that. I don’t even remember how I did it but took a good 3 hours and multiple YouTube videos to get it slid back in.

Just take it out, spin the prop and the shift shaft forward or backwards. Then feel the prop if it’s trying to slip in to forward or reverse.

The last time I did the impeller on my Yamaha I thought all was good. Backed the boat in the water and put it in reverse and nothing. Panic set in and I took it back to the cabin and dropped the Lowe unit again. Here I missed the hole where the splined shifter rod thing goes in when I put it back in.

And if its a Verado series, drain the engine oil first or you will empty the entire crankcase in 3.2 seconds.

I have a yamaha so no issues with that. I am super curious on why it would drain the oil?

The driveshaft seal is also the lower crankshaft seal, when you seperate the two you lose all of the engine oil.

Those engines have a sticker on the lower unit stating to drain engine oil first.
