Lake of the Woods – Fishing Report

Three friends and I returned Sunday from a 2-day trip to Lake of the Woods. We stayed at Sportsman’s Lodge. This was my first time ice fishing LOTW as it was for one other guy in the group. The accommodations were about as I expected. We stayed in one of the smaller cabins and although they are far from fancy and could use updating…they served their purpose. The fish cleaning is a great addition as we literally handed them our buckets and received filleted fish packaged for travel within a couple hours. The night life in the bar/restaurant was entertaining with good food and cold drinks. We did not stick around until the real late hours as at about 11:00 each night it seemed some of the visitors were not exactly “happy” drunks.

After checking in Thursday night, we headed to the watering hole to talk about the bite with others who had already been out. The general consensus was that it was “slow” by LOTW early ice standards, but fish were still being caught with relative ease. We heard anything from houses catching 30-60 fish a day in the past week. We had a day shack both Friday and Saturday with decent, not great, results as many also had. I personally landed 22 fish (50-50 split of saugers & eyes) on Friday over 22′ of water and then 32 fish on Saturday in 20′. At least half of the fish caught were 10-13″ to be released. 2 of my friends are not real serious about fishing and spent time glancing at phones and BS’ing during the slow part of midday and hampered their personal numbers considerably. With more serious efforts, our house could have probably averaged ~70 fish a day. Our biggest fish was only 18″, and we didn’t lose any fish that we felt were any bigger over those two days. In talking with other houses, we found similar results regarding size. 1/8oz buckshots in orange or red and glow colored frostee jigs on dead sticks proved to be the most effective and efficient way to land fish.

We will be back again next year around the same time.

That’s LOTW in a nut shell.
I first went to LOTW 10 years or so ago because I would go to the Pond and get blanked.
I figured at least you never get skunked on LOTW. Sometimes is slow, sometimes it non-stop, but just being up there in that atmosphere is awesome.

LOL, on the not so “happy” drunks. Yup I agree, there can be alot of testosterone up there! LOL!

    Thanks for the report.

    How thick was the ice?

Is Sportsman’s set up the closet ones to the Canada border?

How busy was it up there?

Did you use Adrian’s access to get on Four Mile Bay?

We had 12-14″ of ice under us. Sportsman’s is located on the river, but utilizes Adrian’s access. Sportsman’s has most of their houses located tight to the Canadian border. “Busy” is a relative term. I’d assume their houses are full most weekends barring cancellations. There were a few people in portables who were not staying at Sportsman’s sprinkled in and around their houses. The bar and restaurant were not packed, but busy on Friday and Saturday.

Thanks for the honest report. I’ve stayed at Sportsmans a couple times for open water and have enjoyed it.

That is pretty good action! Although it would be nice to have a few bigger ones in the mix, hard to complain about that action.

Agree with EPG…. been going to Mille Lacs and Leech for years for winter walleye with relatively poor results typically. Just got home from Red Lake and that was awesome and LOTW is next on my list. I think I’ll do a combo of Red and LOTW going forward for my winter walleye fix!

Where is Adrian’s access? Does it still go through 4 mile bay? And isn’t that part of the river? With current?

Did Sportsman’s bring you to the day house or did you have sleds / wheelers?

Adrian’s access does go through 4 mile bay. The river is just to the East of their access. I’m sure there is some subtle current in the area, but nothing too extreme as they were driving stripped down jeeps and Chevy Trackers all over on their staked roads. We went out with the resort. I’m not sure they will even let you run sleds/wheelers to their day houses. Some people were running sleds out on their own, but they were then fishing in portables as well and essentially just paying Sportsman’s for the lodging. It’s a package deal (transportation, bait, and the shacks) when you fish their day houses. It’s a bit spendy when you think about it, especially if you don’t catch fish. My biggest issue is that you are dropped off at prime time for the morning bite and also picked up right when the bite is peaking. It’s a bit of a scramble in the morning to get in and get lines down as every minute missed could be fish at that time. Another 30-45 minutes on each end would really up your numbers as probably 90% of your fish will be caught within 2 hours of sunrise and within 2 hours of sunset. I’m assuming they do not want to be transporting in the dark ahead of sunrise and after sunset however.

LOTW is definitely the place for action/numbers. That system is plump full of 10-13″ fish it seems.
If you are looking for bigger fish consistently over 20″, there’s probably better options with less of a drive.

Thanks for answering my questions buckybadger.

I think all the current/high water this fall has the bite off from what it can be up there at first ice. While the 10-13″ fish are plentiful it is a place where you have a chance at a 32″.

Very similar to our outing up there filming. We had even more saugers than you though. I bet only 25% walleye for us, trying various depths.

I only had to learn that once that’s why we ALWAYS go to Adrians. You can come and go whenever you want.

Curious – is Adrians the only resort who offers the “drive out yourself” option?

I don’t believe any of them let you drive out yourself until ice thickness permits vehicle traffic. Then I’m pretty sure you can drive your own rig out.

    When we going Kurt? ????

Trev – you devil! Just returned from celebrating Ian’s graduation from university of South Carolina masters of accounting school. 4.0. Proud old man moment.

Back to your temptation… sorry but that darn 4 letter word WORK & the upcoming holiday season won’t allow it til Jan. Kids & gkids take priority…

Bucky – thanks for a thorough report! Makes me wanna get up there regardless of the catch rate & size.

    Trev, not exactly.
You may be able to drive your own rig out but they will regulate on and off times and will not deviate from those times, when ice permits. They will kick you out of their houses at quitting time and they won’t give you bait in the morning until a certain time. A resort might come out early when weather moves in and will get you off the lake also.
Traffic is a relative term, traffic as in automobiles or as in snowmobiles, atvs, utvs?
Always call and ask the resorts.

Kurt, I’m not sure if Adrian”s is the only one, but that’s the only one I’ve found in the Wheeler”s point area.
