i am looking for a 9.9 hp outboard 4 stroke with elec start short shaft, lot of brands, tohatsu seems to be the most reasonable, any pros and cons if i should look into one of these motors.

I have a 10+ yr old Tohatsu that is exactly what you are looking for. If it died today I would buy another. That motor has performed flawlessly.

I’ve got a 2001 4stroke nissan/tohatsu. Been on my duck boat and been absolutely abused. Only thing I’ve had to replace is the prop several times and a prop shaft seal once. I’d have no hesitation buying another. Only reason I would get something else is if the cost of an efi motor was worth it. My nissan gets pretty cold blooded below about 25°

I agree with onestout but I think Suzuki, and tohatsu offer efi in the the 9.9, 15, and 20 hp motors now. It looks like Mercury and Yamaha only offer efi in 15 and 20 hp outboards. I believe tohatsu still makes the Mercury motors of that size also. The Mercury does have a really nice tiller handle on the 15 and 20.

In a 9.9 I’d personally go with a Zuke if my Yamaha died today.

Not only is it EFI, but it has more charging capabilities (important if you’re running a couple graphs, livewell, electric downriggers, kicker auto pilot, etc)
