Rapala’s Insane Pricing

How many of you guys have a bunch of Rapala’s in your box? I was at the store yesterday looking for the new Flicker Shad colors and my dad wanted to check out the new Rapala Clackin’ Rap and Clackin’ Minnow. $10 -$13 for these baits. $17 for the X-Rap. That’s insane. God forbid you hang one of these baits up and loose it. $4 for a Flicker Shad is acceptable, especially if you were to loose one.

Rapala must be pretty proud of their products. Have they priced themselves out of the market?

Just imagine us poor guys who like to toss cranks at wingdams! Anytime I can find bombers at a discount I gobble them up and they are relatively cheap lures.

I used to only buy rapalas and now will only buy them at fleet farm when on sale, I had good success with the flicker shad from berkley, they have really good feel, you can find them for around 3 bucks on sale.

There is a solution to saving crankbaits tossed into nasty cover, including rocks and wingdams. Use the oval snaprings on the hooks that are rated for your pound line. These ovals are meant to separate if given a solid, steady pull and will release the hook, giving you back the crankbait. All it takes at that point is another ring and hook…total loss probably less than half a buck.

I saw that, used to be I’d replace lost lures, now when they’re gone, they’re gone. A few years back Joe’s had a clearance on Flicker Shads, something like $1.25. I bought a basket full. That’s pretty much my go to bait in nasty water. jerr

Flicker shads are a great bait for wingdams…usually around the first of may, they go on sale at fleet farm for around 2.79. I used to work in Sporting Goods over last summer and people were willing to pay the price for a shad rap just for the name. I wish they made it one size bigger and one that ran a little shallower to use for summer bass!

I do run a lot of Raps but will never buy those outrageous ones want $15 for though Tanya took quite a likeing to some of them. I think it was only because they were shiney. You know how women are…

I am probly going to buy an air brush this year and stary trying some of my own color combos. That way I can buy bad selling colors of raps when they are in the el cheapo bin and paint over them.

I do like how raps troll perfect out of the box, but will not pitch them into snags. I save such tours of duty for cheaper lures. -Mark

Don’t know if this is true or exact #s, but I’ve heard the R&D for the TriggerX Bio-plastics was MEGABUCKS, and they’re trying to spread this expense to their other products. Sucks, but makes a bit of sense. Noones gonna pay $15 for a package of TriggerX, but some of us “crank” addicts might pay more for certain crankbaits.

Please don’t yell at me…remember I don’t fish for walleyes and the only thing I own with “Rapala” on it is my dads old knife.

However, my punishment for past misdeeds to my parents in my younger years seems to be working in a walleye world…and more specifically, a 99% walleye bait shop.

Which brings me to this point.

Dean’s having his Potato Salad Bucket Sale at Everts.

Now I wish I could tell you what’s in these buckets and the prices, but to tell the truth there wasn’t anything in there that weighed 4 oz or was even close to 80 lbs test. I didn’t really pay attention.

I did happen to notice there were some items that matched some of the lures mentioned in this post. I think they are made out of balsa or maybe plastic. All I know for sure is they’re shiny things with small to me, treble hooks.

Since I won’t be back down here until possibly next weekend…you’ll have to call, email or pm Dean. Might be something you’re looking for(?) ‘Spose you could stop in and see the ol’ fart too.

Everyone knows that the Potato Salad Bucket Sale has prices so low, they can’t be talked about in public forums.

I blame the bass guys! They started buying the $15-20 Lucky Craft cranks and raised the ceiling of what companies could charge/people will pay. Rapala is just following along.

As long as people will buy them Rapala will make them. Give it a year or two and if they are still on the shelf it means people want them. If they are all in the clearance bin I bet we will see more less expensive lures on the shelves. My guess would be that they are here to stay. Im sure rapala did plenty of market research before launching such products.

Someone will have to let me know how these lures work. Cant imagine seeing one in this river rats boat any time soon.

So do you think there is that much more technology, materials and labor in a $17 rapala as compared to a $4 flicker shad? $13 worth? I sure wouldnt think so. My guess would be more money for the manufacture or retail shop. Not that is a bad thing. We all need to make a buck.

Something else to think about. Give a good crank bait for 2 to $3 a piece and Ill drop a $100 bucks on them no problem. Try to sell me one for 10 or even $15 buck and I wont even crack the wallet. Now the question for the retailers is which purchase would you rather have me make?

Cool. Now that they cost more than Salmos I can justify buying Salmo lures.

Wandered into fleet farm in owatonna today looking for some stuff and ran accross a canoe loaded end to end with lures of all sorts, The clackin raps along with a huge variety of rapalas were all priced at 35% off of the 9.99 price tags. At 6.49 I could not pass up grabbing a bunch. I do not know if all fleet farms are doing this sale but if your close it’s worth the trip.
