I keep watching but don’t ever see anything posted on Kab so I thought I would put something in the general section. How would you rate the lake for walleye fishing? I am looking for somewhere for a family vacation for next summer and there is a much larger resort selection than on Rainy. I was hoping to go hit Rainy, and still might, but haven’t really found what I am looking for and noticed that Kab has a lot of places to stay. Just looking for opinions on Kab. Thanks

http://www.idlewildresort.com On Kab
Call Tim Snyder (612-581-4355)
Good times up there and Tim will get you on the fishTell him Josh from Pequot Lakes sent you
November 29, 2010 at 3:27 am #912964Kec’s Cove is also another very clean and well priced place. The fishing is great, you just have to watch out for alot of rocks and ledges that appear out of nowhere it seems. Larry at Kecs can give you the skinny on the fish and how to and where the rocks are. The fish are in great shape. This is one lake that really responded to the slot limit size..Even the saugers have grown to very nice sizes.
Give Larry a call and he can give you the low down. its also on the internet…

Or you can cook your own as all cabins are furnished with cooking stuff. Very nice couple. It doesnt have a beach for swimming though…FF
November 29, 2010 at 2:23 pm #913015Kabetogama is a great lake but you need some time on the lake or good advice to get on the fish,I would second Snyders Idlewild Resort, they have a pool and playground.
November 29, 2010 at 3:17 pm #913034I’ve been going to Kab since ’55 and staying at the Idlewild thru Dewey and now Tim as owners. I want to second that Tim is doing an excellent job at running a family resort.
All that said, Kab seems to have shifted towards a SM lake in the last decade. I last went, admittedly late, and had a difficult time finding eyes even with Tim’s excellent advice.
All of that said, I’m used to early eyes and really didn’t have a plan B set up.
I will be going back, but better prepared for deep water eyes.
November 29, 2010 at 3:33 pm #913045I have a seasonal on the Ash River Trail. Kab. seems to be a pretty good Walleye lake like the others have said. I fish Pike and Smallmouth so I can’t offer much insight on Walleyes.
There are a bunch of resorts on Kab. and even a few down on the trail. How old are the kids? Not much to do in the area except what the resorts offer. I-Falls will offer some shopping, movie theater, parks ect. that aren’t available on Kab.
If you have never been on Kab. or Rainy a trip up to the Kettle Falls Hotel is a must see! Great place for lunch and a very senic boat ride up there.

A large portion of these lakes yield that rocky shoreline making for tremendous fish habitat. On the flip side few resorts are able to boast a sugar sand beach with roped swimming areas for the “Chillins”. I’m less familiar with all of the resorts on Lake Kabetogama as of course Rainy Lake as we live here. I do however believe that the slot restrictions have been equally beneficial to our southern Counterparts fishing on Lake Kabetogama though a smaller fishery. My fishing has been limited to hardwater only in that region. If you care for more information please don’t hesitate to send me a “PM”. I’ll try my best to assist you with some local knowledge.
November 29, 2010 at 5:09 pm #913078Thanks for all the replys. My limiting factor right now is the hunting dogs and having to bring them with, I may look into finding someone to watch them for us though to open up some more options.
I know there will be a learning curve to find the fish, That’s why I was hoping to find something on Rainy so I could try hooking up with Chris for a couple half days (that option has not been ruled out yet, still in the research phase).

That truly seems like an excellent though process!!
November 29, 2010 at 10:45 pm #896276Last year a guy on WC was looking for a place for his dogs also. I directed him to Phil at Gateway Store on Kab. You can reach him at (218) 875-2121 Phil knows nearly as much about Kab. as Chris does about Rainy.
If there is a place for your dogs he will know it.
If you get looking for a guide let me know, I can hook you up with a licensed guide for Kab. and of course Chris can handle Rainy.
If you are into scenery you will love it up there.
