Of course we all have a good cereal recipe, but time after time I go all the way back to the basics and do my best with good ole corn or bread.
If you decide to use bread, be sure to peel the crust off first and use about half the slice. Wad the bread around the shank of your hook while making sure to keep the hook point exposed. If you bury the point many times the bread will become so hard that while the carp is making the run, you’ll pop the doughball out of its mouth on the hookset. Lastly, AFTER you have made your cast and laid down your pole (bail open
), take the crust and wad it up into little doughballs and throw them out around where you casted. It’ll bring them in WAY faster and normally in good numbers. Make sure not to throw too many balls out there (approx 6-12 is plenty).
Next, if you decide to use corn, the way for it to be REAL effective is to make sure your corn-covered hook is laying in the middle of a corn spread. What I mean is… thread as many kearnels onto your hook all the way up to the eye, cast it out (not futher than you can throw), then take a handful of corn and throw it out right over where you casted. It’ll get ’em good.
Lastly, when it comes to cereal doughballs, I still believe Wheaties is the best. Not just plain Wheaties though. I grew up mixing vanilla extract, a pouch of strawberry Kool-Aid, and a touch of powdered sugar in too…
Good luck
