Carp fishing – dough bait recipes.

I am looking for a recipe(s) for a good dough bait for catching a few carp. We have a lot of lakes around here that have big carp – and lots of them. I would like to give them a try this summer – and am looking for a decent dough bait recipe. Catching a bunch of big carp would be way better than chasing stinky bass all summer….

Of course we all have a good cereal recipe, but time after time I go all the way back to the basics and do my best with good ole corn or bread.

If you decide to use bread, be sure to peel the crust off first and use about half the slice. Wad the bread around the shank of your hook while making sure to keep the hook point exposed. If you bury the point many times the bread will become so hard that while the carp is making the run, you’ll pop the doughball out of its mouth on the hookset. Lastly, AFTER you have made your cast and laid down your pole (bail open ), take the crust and wad it up into little doughballs and throw them out around where you casted. It’ll bring them in WAY faster and normally in good numbers. Make sure not to throw too many balls out there (approx 6-12 is plenty).

Next, if you decide to use corn, the way for it to be REAL effective is to make sure your corn-covered hook is laying in the middle of a corn spread. What I mean is… thread as many kearnels onto your hook all the way up to the eye, cast it out (not futher than you can throw), then take a handful of corn and throw it out right over where you casted. It’ll get ’em good.

Lastly, when it comes to cereal doughballs, I still believe Wheaties is the best. Not just plain Wheaties though. I grew up mixing vanilla extract, a pouch of strawberry Kool-Aid, and a touch of powdered sugar in too…

    Good luck .

First off – you guys disappoint me – no reactions to the “stinky bass” comment….sheesh.

Thanks for the replies. I have never targetted them, but have lucked into a few 12-15 lb fish while crappie fishing in the spring. When you guys target them, do you generally get a lot of action? The guys I see fishing with crawlers only get an occasional fish – and I have never seen anybody trying for them and succeeding much. It seems like a good way to kill an evening off shore after work in the spring/summer.

If dudes are carp fishing with crawlers, that would explain why their fishing was slow.

As for the bass comment, you know I’m biting my tongue… . I could take you out for 4 hours of fishing and make you a bass die-hard…I have no doubts.

Very soft white bread, creamy peanut butter, Sorgham (sp)syrup. Remove the crust from bread, mix peanut butter, and Sorgham (sp). Form into balls and mold around treble hook. Not a bad snack either.

No you couldn’t. Grew up fishing them a lot – lots of fun, but it ain’t my cup of tea. I really enjoy hitting them for an afternoon here and there, but for a full day….give me a nice day on Superior and some lakers or salmon……. Way better’n a stinky bass……

Corn is usually going to be your best ticket and easiest bait to use. As mentioned above make sure you completely cover the hook as most carp won’t bother with the bait if they sense the hook being there. Best hooks as far as I’m concerned are your typical number 2 walleye hook.

If you really want to make some bait you could also try doing some boillies. These will stay on your hook alot better than any regular dough recipe. Here’s a basic recipe:

Just mix up some corn meal, soy flour, and semolina in equal parts

In a seperate bowl plop in a few eggs; some food coloring; and some flavoring like koolaid, sugar, maple syrup, bird seed, or whatever floats your boat; and also some vegetable oil…And then proceed to mix ’em up. After the ingredients are mixed add the flour mix and knead it with your hands till you get a firm dough. Let it sit for about 15 minutes or so and then make some little balls out of it (you can also freeze what you don’t use to make more later). Throw the balls in boiling water for a couple minutes and you’ve got yourself some awesome carp bait. Try experimenting with different flavors and colors to see what the fish in your area like the most. Good Luck!

My uncle swears by Wheaties and 7-UP. Just add 7-UP until you get a dough texture.
