What was the worse purchase of your lifetime? I bought and sold a boat during covid which I regret. Whats your worse purchase….and no, mailorder brides don’t qualify.

I bought a BMW 550i that was poorly timed. I don’t regret the purchase because the car was amazing. But, about 18 months later I bought a bigger boat that our SUV couldn’t handle. So, I had to trade in the car to buy a truck.

The depreciation on BMW’s is bad. When it was all said and done I took about a $5k bath on the BMW. It was purchased with cash but it depreciated so quick I took it in the shorts when I traded it in.

But, it was a 4 door sedan that went 0-60 in 5.5 seconds so while it was financially foolish I enjoyed every moment of the car.

I know one guy on the forum that would say my Ram’s have been a foolish purchase but we’ll leave that topic alone for now…

A Johnson 9hp, vintage sometime in the 1970’s. It would start if it was cold, but once it was warm you couldn’t get it running until it was cold again. After doing a lot of research I found that there was a design flaw in the intake manifold leading to vapor lock problems. I gave it away for parts as I couldn’t see myself sticking somebody else with this little monster. Tough to eat the cost.

Buying a home in 2005.. My wife and I bought a little shack in St Paul Park for 167K. By 2010 it was worth 87K.. I put about 15,000 into roof, siding and other improvements/updates inside. We sold for 150K in 2018. We did nothing wrong and loved the little house but we got shafted by the environment of the market. Just bought and sold the wrong home at the wrong times. I still believe it worked out good for my family if we exclude the financial side. Was a tough pill to swallow but is what it is.

We had the exact thing happen with my wife’s condo. She bought it before we got married for around $170k in 2004. We tried to sell in 2006 when we got married but the best offer was like $120k. We rented for 4 years and eventually sold for $140k.

That was a tough one but we were able to take advantage of the market downturn and buy a house for way below the actual value.

I believe there is a lot of value in a home outside of the monetary side. The memories and time spent are value a lot of people forget about. Sounds like you had that.

It’s funny that this thread got me thinking about all the (now) insignificant hits I took in life. I’m going to be 66 next month and pretty much everything that seemed like a big deal really hasn’t added up to much. Probably the biggest at the time was my first house in 1990. I should’ve bought one before that but a failed first marriage and a few other issues derailed that till I was 30. I bought a nice home in South Mpls for $87.9K. Of course then, FHA rates were like 12-13%. I’d gotten involved with my now wife and spent 90% of my time at her place so my home became a nuisance and pain in the butt. I had put a few bucks into it but finally sold it 3-4 years later. I forget what I got for it but I do know I wrote a check at closing to “pay” to sell it! I cringe to see what it’s worth now but that’s life! Setbacks are usually temporary in my experience.

Somebody from Wisconsin has to chime in about the time they bought a share of packers stock that’s worth as much as flushed toilet paper.

They cover the cracks in the plaster in old houses.

I bought some cigars from a guy on the beach in Cabo, they were suppose to be Cubans. They tasted like dog turds.

and if I can’t count my X-wife(s) I’m taking my marbles and leaving. moon rotflol

Mine would have to be the Larson FX 2020 that I bought new. That boat was an absolute pile of crap. They did give me a new one at the end which I promptly sold for what I paid for the boat originally so I guess it worked out in the end. I feel sorry for whoever has that boat now if it’s still even around.

I looked hard at the Larsons because I was moving to glass and they were so much cheaper than everything else. I eventually concluded it was too good to be true and went with the Ranger.

I haven’t heard too many good things about the Larson. I did like the look of the boats though.

Worst buy for me would be by far a Crestliner Boat about 15 or 20 years ago. Not so much the boat, but the motor that was on it. In 8 trips to the lake with that boat, It only ran good or ran at all on the first time out. Sold it for half what I paid the next spring after I could not make it start and never looked back. I see it from time to time at a local lake here with a 115 4 stroke yamaha on it now. I should have thought of that!!

My friends always joked and said it’s a super nice boat…too bad it’s a piece of $hit. The layout was amazing and it handled the rough stuff really well, probably a bit too well for the way it was built. If you really got after it when it was super rough you could look the boat over afterwards and see all the new cracks in the hull. I will say Larson stood behind their product and were awesome to deal with the few years I had the boats. When I got the new one it was pretty much a gentleman’s agreement that I’d sell it right away. Probably a great boat for people that fish smaller water or fair weathered people but it definitely wasn’t a good fit for us

Whirlpool Kitchen Appliances – I had brutal luck with them in a house I eventually flipped…despite buying the appliances brand new

Grainbelt Blu Beer the other day – I couldn’t take more than a swig and wanted to throw up

Dewalt Impact – Not sure of the model, but it was when brushless tools were just becoming a thing. I burnt up a brushless impact on maybe 25 3” deck screws. From that point on I moved on to Milwaukee everything and couldn’t be happier.

Yardman Lawn Tractor- I bought a brand new one for my parents maybe 10-12 years ago and despite it being one of the higher models, that thing couldn’t get out of its own way and always had an issue.

I bought a yard machine push lawnmower, not sure if it’s the same as the yardman, but that thing was worthless. Had it 1 1/2 years and I put it on the curb free and wrnt out and bought a Toro.

Oh GOD crazy I bought a mixed pack of that and some kind of yellow/shandy cans a couple summers ago and it was horrid. Unbelievable that they even put it on shelves. What were they thinking? What even WAS it??? Sickening.

    Anyone else?

I remember buying piles of that because it was on super sale, I’m guessing because nobody drank it. Gets the job done when your going for effect and not flavor.
