Anniversary weekend for my FW and we are heading up to Grand Superior Lodge. Wondering if there is a smallmouth bite from shore anywhere in that area or any trout within shorefishing distance this time of year (not hopeful). Any other suggestions are welcome. Not bringing the boat and will probably sneaking out early mornings before the wife wakes up. mrgreen

Probably no smallmouth. Lakers can be anywhere especially if there’s a little chop on the water.

I’ve been seeing a lot of boat traffic in close to the breakwater in Two Harbors so that structure likely has some fish near it. 1/2 ounce gold/orange stripe Kastmasters, Krokodile spoons or 2/5 ounce little cleos in the gold/orange configuration. Use a ball bearing swivel! If you fish within 100 feet of a river mouth you need a single hook, not a treble.

Most areas within casting distance on the shore are rocky so you’ll want to watch how long you count the lure down. Just ticking the rocks can be a good thing but you may donate some lures. That breakwater is a great place to fish. Maybe closer than Two Harbors for you the Silver Bay Marina has a stone breakwater that can be real good fishing. I’ve had real good fishing right next to the outlet of the marina into the lake…really deep within a cast there. Have a net.

Have a great time. There really is something special about the big lake, take time to feel it and share with your bride.

We’ve been up to the north shore quite a few times and Duluth even more. The north shore is definitely a special place.
