Does the brand matter with 1lb Propane Tanks?

Out fishing Mille Lacs yesterday and all season I have been using a Jiffy Pro4 to drill holes. Been less than impressed with the performance when compared to last season so I changed the oil (I should have done that before the season started, but I didn’t), replaced the 1 year old blade set and replaced the plug. Still had less than brand new performance.

I have been using some off brand Propane tanks this season and it was the only variable left to adjust. Went back to Coleman instead of the off brand value tanks. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Ran like when I first bought it. Just a beast!

Anyone else see performance differences depending on the brand of propane? In heaters, lamps or augers? Is there any post processing to propane when removed from the ground other than adding the smell factor that could lead to different qualities of propane?

I’m convinced that the more one costs, the better the filtering of the fuel going into the bottle. The Coleman bottles have done well for me. As a jig maker I use propane for my heat source for powder painting. The low-cost bottles don’t last as long and I have more flame-related inconsistencies with them. The Coleman bottles are a world apart from the el-cheapos.

Aside from poor performance ive had issues with propper sealing when I use them in my big buddy. Never had an issue with coleman.
I’m convinced there is poor quality propane out there. Happens with the 20# tank exchangers also. Not the sealing aspect but the performance value. I no longer do exchanges. Besides I save money and get more fuel.

In a word-YES. I’ve experience similar issues with my heaters, grills, lanterns, etc. Finally went back to strictly Coleman fuel-problems solved! waytogo

I have had thread issues on some of the off brands.

I didnt blow up in my buddies portable or anything trying to thread one on and not realizing a considerable amount was leaking out … whistling
So be careful and buy Name brand 1 pounders is my point!

Have always heard to use Coleman in cold weather. So that is what I have done and never had a problem. Only ever used off brands in the little propane grill in summer.

I had significant problems with off-label brand canisters this fall. A simple switch to a Coleman tank fixed the problem. Unbelievable how that is possible. This was firing up a Little Buddy heater and running a camp stove.

    Coleman only for me now.

I can confirm this difference myself in a variety of 1lb propane applications. I also have heard from Jiffy reps that the small opening at the intake portion of the propane connection is sensitive to dirty propane. This effect is amplified in extremely cold weather. Coleman is the way to go, seems like case prices on these make them much more reasonable.

I will say I always thought Coleman tanks were better fitting (threads on straight) and better starting/burning on a buddy heater.

i have been refilling my 1 pounders for years off of a 20pounder that i mostly fill at lundeens bait in onamia. i have never had any issues with any apperatus that excepts 1 pounders, from a simple torch to heaters to a hot shower for camping. i don’t have a propane auger, so i can’t comment on that, but there might be something to that less filtered fuel gumming up the orfis(sp) and causing the auger to not run as good.

My jiffy propane has been a bit doggy as of late also. I better check to see what tank is on there. I have that little tank coozie on there so I cant see the brand.

    Thanks JD
