Feed Bag Crappies on Lake Zumbro

The weather was wonderful with 70 degrees and little wind, so Ron (RHW) and I decided a trip to hunt crappies was in order. Lake Zumbro slabs were on our minds and we would not be disappointed! With the bright sunny skis and water temp at 63, we decided to see if any fish had moved shallow. Read on for more information!

Ron and I were using 9 ft. custom St Croix UL rods. We had our favorite mini-mite jigs set under a bobber at about 2 ft. There was no need to use any meat to tip the jigs today. The boat was kept away from shore and we cast toward the shallow shoreline targeting submerged wood or other cover. The fish showed a strong preference for being around cover.

The fishing was excellent! We kept a couple meals and released the rest of them. Probably caught over 75 nice crappies and some nice bluegills as well. The fish were not the least bit bashful. When they decided to bite, the bobber would just disappear quickly! Set the hook, and what a great fight on the ultra-light equipment!!!

What a fun day! Fishing with my buddy, great weather, and lots of big fish. It just doesn’t get much better than that! Hope you can get out to enjoy some great spring-time fishing!

Been fishing Rochester and the surrounding area for 40+ years. I love all the lakes, rivers, and impoundments around Rochester, as well as pool 4 of the Mississippi.

  1. Thanks for the report and pics. That water temp has moved up some since last Saunday which is great to see. Its amazing what a few degrees can do to turn the fish on. And its going to get even better.
    Thanks, Bill

  2. Mike, thanks for the shoreline tip, we ended up gettin a couple nice gills off of it but we went back to the bay we were anchored in when i first talked to you and ron, and did we ever find the mother load of slabs!! They were down deeper 6-7 f.o.w. It was great fun and my 7 yr. old had a blast.

  3. Yes Mike it was one beautiful day and the fishing was fantastic. We experienced the type of fishing that Al Linder video tapes and airs later on TV. This was indeed THE spring crappie bite that all dreams about.
Of course the company is what also made for a memorable day.

  4. nice slabs – ultralight equipment
that raises the question what is more fun, the catching or the eating?
    thanks for the great report
