Walleye post spawn action on the border!

While I sit here with a cracked rib, lamenting lost fishing/work time I finally am getting this post out. This past week the Menominee River found only a handful of anglers, 95% of which were out on the big water pulling cranks and spinners. Well I knew with a good current still running our River plastics bite would remain. My friend Pete went out Sat and had a great day with several fish from 23-29″ clobber his Moxies…

That prompted my buddy Mark and I to get out after church on Mothers Day and head down for the afternoon. The current had slowed so we adapted by upping our jig weights and working slightly deeper edges…Marks rod snapped back and it was “Fish on!”. He did that to me on the next two consecutive casts also…HEY! When do I get to fish? cried the net boy All three were nice heavy fish…a 28″ post spawn female and two thick 20 & 22″ males

We used 6’6″-6’8″- Med Fast rods…Mine a Quantum Exo Tour and Mark preferred a Limit Creek. I’m a 6# HI Vis mono guy and Mark 4# braid with an 8# fluoro leader…both approaches worked well.

There are several ways these walleye may be caught, but we both prefer casting jigs w plastics…I just love to feel the sharp tug when they attack my Moxie, which has been just amazing for me the past couple spring seasons. We had been on the water about three hours and had boxed 3 eyes and released 7 post spawn females from 26-29″. What a blessing to have a fishery like this about 90 minutes from home.

With the sunset coming on we moved back up to the shallow edges of points and riprap…trying for a few more eater males. Mark landed a surprise 26″ fat, egg laden female. After a good battle, picture, and release we managed to weed through the next eight to box 5 more fat , healthy males. Good enough for some quality meals we called it a day…zoomed home and managed to take the wives out for ice cream…after all it was Mothers Day

  1. Sorry to hear about the busted rib, Tom. Let me guess, it only hurts when you laugh? Actually as someone that has been through the same I know you can add “it hurts when I breath” as well.

Thanks for the report. We were out in that area two weeks ago and launched in the river but never fished until we got out on the bay. Our fishing was really good on #12 Down Deep Husky Jerks behind boards when the sun was out. Very slow when the clouds rolled in.
