Pool 4 Amogst the Sauger Anglers

Today, while 25 to 30 boats were fishing the “edges” of the scour hole there was one boat anchor smack dab in the middle of the dam area. One lone boat anchored in the deep water with four Hi Vis lines angling from the rod tips down towards and into the depths of the river.

Two brothers from Iowa and one guy in a yellow PDF/jacket.

The odd ducks.

While rods were bending and nets were getting wet with what seemed like hundreds of saugers and walleye going into boats all around us, like the stubborn fisherman that won’t use the lure that everyone is catching fish with…just to be stubborn.

We were using cut bait. No saugers seldom bite on cut bait.

We were channel cat fishing…no surprise huh?

Rigging was simply a Team Catfish 3/0 Double Action hook attached to a swivel, a 3 oz no roll sinker all held together with 20 pound Tug O War Electric Green mono.

The channels were not a slam bang bend over. It was a tap tap slight bend of the rod tip. The Double Action hooks did all the work. Lift rod out of the holder and start reeling.

While rigging a rod, I looked up at Dave and was shocked! I thought I was in Touched By an Angle Tv show.

All in all, the cat bite wasn’t a hot summer bite, but we did box 8 channels from 4 to 5 pounds, released one beer belly brute at just under 10 pounds along with the rod bending pull of the 39 inch Lake Sturgeon.

It’s been a great year taking out old friends and new friends. Each trip is cat fishing, but it always uniquely different.

A special thanks to Kari and Steve at Everts Fishing Resort for making it a place I look forward to returning to and to all the fishermen/women I’ve taken out this year or met on the water.

Livin’ The Dream by making smiles.
