Wissota Fish Crib Project Update

    Here is an update on the fish crib project for this year.

    Just out of curiosity, what is the theory behind putting the cribs in the lake?

    The cribs provide habitat for the fish. Bait and panfish are drawn to the cribs for cover, this also draws the larger game fish at times. They have put hundreds of cribs into Wissota over the years.

    In your guy’s opinion… not specifically talking Wissota.

    At what point do you think a lake gets too many cribs in it?

    When you lose 6 cranks in an after work or evening outing. I think we are over 600 now in Wissota.Possibly 1 per every 10 acres? Im sure glad they are put in clusters.Easier to keep track of & coordinate with gps.

    That is what I thought and it sounds like a good idea. I know of a few lakes in WI with cribs and I’m wondering if there are any in MN?

    That new lake map is unbelievable. Do you guys have any idea how on Earth they can be giving those things away for free. The thing is very nicely detailed, in color, and virtually indestructible. I was looking at it this weekend and just couldn’t believe it was free. Was there a grant of something granted to the group that put it together? What made me think of the map is all this talk of cribs. You could darn near walk across the lake on the cribs. Especially those on the West side of the lake. Should be a handy little scouting tool.

    The final tally is 38 cribs built. They are in two groups, one of 19 cribs and the other of 18.

    There are also 4 new jumbo rock reefs in the lake.

    They should be at any local to Eau Claire sporting goods store.
    Gordy’s True Value on the Lake Wissota or downtown
    Chippewa Falls will have them – for sure.
