I was a freshman in high school. On our way to school, the bus driver had the radio on and they mentioned a plane hitting one of the towers. No one had any details. I remember them saying they (DJ’s) thought it was a small prop plane.

Exactly the same experience for me too, on the radio they thought it was a small plane and seemed to downplay it. When I got to school and saw the TVs, I knew it was a much larger deal than what the radio was saying. The rest of the morning we were all glued to the TV and remember the gasps of watching the 2nd plane hit live on TV and then the towers falling, everyone sitting in shock.

On my way to class my freshman year of college. One of my new friends met us and tried describing it, but had no idea what was really happening until we got to class.

I was on the phone with the our Funding Corp in Jersey City just across the river from Manhattan. We were trying to figure out what was going on, what the smoke was, if people we knew were ok, then the gal said, “OMG another plane just hit the towers”.

So any psycho who says there weren’t planes or it never happened, you can tell them I know many people who saw it happen with their own eyes.

I was just starting math class in 6th grade. Teacher walked in and told us to turn the TV on. Watched in silence for about 15 minutes before the teacher got a call on her phone to shut all TV’s and radios off, but not before we watched the second plane hit…My now wife (who I didn’t even know at the time) was sitting at the desk near me, crying. I had no idea what was going on…Heck, at 11 years old, I’m glad I was naive enough to not quite understand it…

I was on a bus on the 4th Street ramp coming into downtown Minneapolis listening to the KQ Morning Show. At the time I worked in the IDS Center. The law firm I worked for closed for the day not long after the second plane hit. I didn’t have a bus to get back to my car for another hour or two so I was just going to work until it was time to leave. The next thing I knew the fire alarm was going off. Those of us still in the office got out of the building so fast. Found out the next day it was a false alarm but it was definitely scary at the time.

People say that? I have not heard that. I have heard about the inside job theories and also the fact that a plane didn’t hit the pentagon but it was a missile. But I think its pretty well received that two planes hit the towers. Whether those two planes caused the towers to fall is a debate for a different place and would take this post off topic.

I was also in a freshman HS science class, we were all called into the auditorium for the news …

Seems like we have a lot of active mid 30’s people on this forum as well as good old boys! Glad to see the different ages come together over our love for the outdoors!

I was in my final year for college…for fire/rescue. Was sleeping in when my roommate said we were under attack…didn’t believe it. He woke me up again when the second plain hit.

Went down a different job path (unrelated) but still volunteer for a local fire dept.

Second year of college, Tuesdays I didnt have a class till 1030 so I always slept in. Got up and showered and what not then left to grab some food at the student center before class. No cell phone, didnt turn my computer on so oblivious to what was going on. When I got down the main floor lobby it was on TV and I thought it was a movie until someone said something. Ended up not grabbing any food and was late for class as I stood watching the news about it.
My grandfather passed that night as well, my brother was stationed in Boston at the time and was able to come back for the funeral which in a odd way did allow us to see him before he went overseas a month or two later.

I do also recall looking up in the sky in the days after and seeing no planes up there, usually you could almost always pick a few out way up there

I was a senior in high school. My mom called the school and told me to come home to say goodbye to my dad because he was in the guard and was being activated.

I was at home getting a few things done around the house before i went to work, as I was working second shift at the time.
The radio was on as usual when the first reports started to come over the radio. Had the radio on the whole ride into work. When I got there everyone was searching internet. Needless to say not much work got done.

Not being old enough for Pearl Harbor this was the strangest day of my life. I watched hours of it unfold on TV. Nobody really had a clue what happened for sure for several hours or if they did they weren’t saying. On that morning 17 years ago all the Worlds problems came ashore in the United States. Bin Laden became a monster to be hunted. These were no longer crazy people across the oceans, these were crazy people in our country. The war was being brought to our own soil. We will never be the same again.

    Thoughts and prayers.

I just graduated high school the spring before and was working at a little bait shop in Balsam Lake.

The radio was always on, and it happened as the KQ morning show was airing.

We couldn’t believe what we were hearing, and grabbed an old little black and white TV from the back room.

Customers came in, most had no idea of it until they walked in. Soon there was a dozen of us packed around that little TV, when the second plane hit hardly a word was spoken….we all just stood there in disbelief.

Two of my best friends had just finished basic at the time and were sent to Iraq shortly after to kick some ass for old glory!

God bless America and all those we lost that day, and every day since.

I just arrived at work for the morning when the first plane hit. Thought it was a small aircraft until the second plane hit and all hell broke loose. I will never forget the lineup for gas because of the feared gas shortage coming, and the silence in the air during the flying ban. On a side note, if you ever get to New York, please go to the memorial. It will change your life.

I was building a stainless steel vessel for all the guys that need Viagra. grin ok seriously I was welding inside a vessel though.

This morning listening to my favorite morning show and they talked a bit about some wanting 9-11 to be a national holiday and some not. They did not go into a lot of details. What’s your thoughts????

Personally I absolutely do not feel a terrorist attack should be a holiday of any sort.

Sophomore in high school in American History class nonetheless.

Had my Drivers Ed class that night and sat in line for almost 2 hours at the gas station waiting to fill up due to everyone being afraid we would run out of gas in the weeks to come.

People in front of us were filling their vehicles and any gas cans they had as well. Crazy!

I agree that 9/11 should not be a holiday. It is on my calendar as “Patriot Day”. I believe that is enough. It should be no more comeritived than Dec 7th “Pearl Harbor” Day.

Why should we recognize a day as a national holiday when we were caught with our pants around our ankles???

Second question I have to ask is, Why would you think so?

I know where I was at that time and reliving this where I was has no significant value to me. There is so many atrocities that have occurred after that.

I was at a remote fishing outpost in Ontario. We did notice a lack of float planes (turns out they were grounded) after one in our party was listening to his transistor radio that evening while we were prepping dinner.

It was a night of gut punches as the only station we could get was the BBC and by this time at night they were already into analysis instead of talking about exactly what happened. As we listened we knew it was something big, but it took hours to actually figure out the scope of what happened.

Three days later our outfitter flew in after the air space opened (at least partially) to see if anyone needed to go home and deliver a stack of newspapers. I remember it plainly as he pulled up to our small boat on a remote lake after circling to find someone from our party. He had tears in his eyes as he told us the news.

Coming back home was an experience too. Waited for 5+ hours at the I-Falls border which was manned by troops in full body armor and heavy weapons. Everyone out of the vehicle, dogs searching everyone and every vehicle.

I remember all of the US flags and signs on the overpasses in Canada as we drove back to I-Falls. I was surprised by the outpouring of support from our neighbors to the North.

As we approach the 20th anniversary, I just can’t help but think of all the lives lost, all the brave men and women who put their lives on hold to help and assist that day. My gratitude goes out to the first responders and reaches out with a heavy heart beyond – to the brave good samaritans, the employees at local hospitals, the LEOs trying their best to keep their own emotions calm while trying desperately to control the chaos, and to the workers who cleaned up in the aftermath of the attacks. Many of us haven’t seen such trauma and I’m forever grateful and in awe of those who’ve done the impossible, who brave the chaos, who’ve died for us, and especially for those who are still among us, living with images in their minds that they an never unsee. 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙

It was my oldest’s first day of daycare. I dropped him off and went to work. My wife called me shortly after I had gotten to my office and said a plane “crashed” into one of the towers. At first the news thought it was a small plane. I went down to the cafeteria to watch on the tv and we watched live the second plane fly into the other tower.
We stood it utter shock and disbelief and it became obvious this wasnt an accident.
At this moment I was terrified for the world my new son was going to grow up in. I almost couldnt make it through the day and wanted to go pick him up.

I was in my truck on my way to work… had the radio on, I heard them say a plane hit the World Trade center… I pictured a Cessna or something… then when the 2nd one hit, the announcer said, this is no accident, this is a deliberate attack. From that point on, the rest of that day I felt anger and helplessness.

I was at the office in St. Louis Park, turned the TV on just in time sto see the second plane hit the World Trade Center. Freaked out due to a cousin working for a big financial company with offices there. Turned out he was in an office across the river but he lost many friends. Shortly thereafter he resigned and joined the Army, became an intelligence officer and spent some time in Afghanistan and Iraq. He’ll be retiring in the spring with just over 20 years in the service. I’m proud of him. His younger brother was (still is) in the Navy, their dad was a colonel in the Air Force at the time.

9/11 aftermath – an engineer who worked for me was at the company office in Denver that week. No flights back, no rental cars available anywhere in the area. He rented a U-Haul 24 foot truck and drove back to MSP. I was happy to approve his expense report.
