This post is in no way to drum up any businesses. I have more orders to fill right now than I want. I make rods for fun and it is starting to become work. This post is to show (off) some of the work I have done. I have been contacted by multiple people wonder what my rods look like and how they compare to this or that. Since I can’t send a picture thru a PM I thought I would just post some. As far as the action goes I have no problem shaping the blank to anything you are looking for. And yes I like to make the last three guides glow on ice rods, open water rod not as much unless you ask for it.

I am always looking for different ideas and was wondering what the other builders are doing. Please share or ask any questions. I am happy to help.

Looks like I picked out many of the same style butt wrap viewing thru the random picture I posted. I do many other styles of wraps. But the arrow forward is one of my favorites. I just don’t see it on many rods unlike the diamond wrap.

Works of art Rodman! I also build rods but definitely more functional than art like yours. Not saying yours aren’t functional just that I don’t have the patience for the fancy thread wrapping. Do you turn your own handles? That is one thing that I do that I think dresses up a rod nicely. I’ll include a few pics also.

The first one is a St.Croix Legend that a buddy hooked off a rock pile on lake of the woods. Stripped the handle and rebuilt it.

Unless other material is requested, I make my handles from scratch. I found some rubber cork material that is a little heaver than just cork. But the rubber in it actually increase sensitivity and vibrations. I also don’t mind the extra weight for balancing out the rod. It is a ¼” thick sheet that I punch out on a press I made. Then I glue it all up on a steel rod that is a hair smaller than the blank and shape the handle on a lathe. This way I can make the handle to any shape or diameter that you want to match your hand. You would not believe how comfortable this handle is on my bait caster using all day.

Thanks. Thats a cool deal the way you make your own rings essentially. I do use a rubberized cork ring for the front and back of each handle just for a wear/strength factor I guess.

I have used all the different materials that are offered thru the different rod making companies and other materials. I have yet to get into the carbon fiber rod handles because I think it would be a problem balancing the rod out the way I like to. I also don’t like the idea of using foam spacers to make them. I think it decrease sensitivity. I have picked up some carbon handle rods with the same blanks to test it out and can tell you I feel this is true. Please correct me if you feel I am wrong. I think you are on the right track Red Eye by putting some rubberized cork on the butt of the rod.

Thought I would bump this because I am getting questions again. Just put the epoxy on another 2 rods and they are drying right now.

Not a very good picture but I put a cfx carbon fiber handle on one of my personal rods.
I dont mind it from the little I’ve had a chance to use it…it is my hole hoping rod and I didn’t get it done until ice was almost over. If you want an extremely light setup that is the way to go. I don’t personally spend much time balancing my own personal ice rods. Have done some long rods with a cfx handle and before I start them I ask for the reel that they will be putting on it so I can balance it accordingly.

It is important to have the reel before you start for this reason on open water rods.

I need to start remembering to take pictures of all the rods I make. I forgot to take picture of the last two that left my shop.
