I suppose taking you fight to PM’s or starting another thread is out of the question?

That is exactly what I have done. This was by means a fight. Just Two people stating their own opinions. Even if they are different that’s OK. I’ve never told anyone their opinion is wrong or they are not entitled to one.

I work part-time for a local grocery store stocking shelves.
I know they don’t pay them very good but I watch closely the gals change prices. She told me once in the hundred or so they do in a day maybe 3-4 go down.

One day Maxwell coffee went up 3 bucks, the following week it went on sale for half of the price it was🙄

Kwik Trip still sells eggs for $1.79/ dozen.

We took the logical path forward and stopped shopping at the independent grocers and shifted to Aldi. Certain items I am adamant about buying at kwik trip because they are 100% cheaper than grocery stores. Milk, eggs, potatoes, apples, and bananas.

Our grocery bill has not increased much at all because we just started shopping smarter. The people I hear the most complaining from tend to grocery shop at target, which was a terrible idea even before biden-flation.

Grocery prices are high here also. But both grocery stores are owned by the same company. There are no Aldies, Kwik Trip or anything like that. You buy from the grocery stores or Menards or hop between the 3 different dollar stores in town.

The main problem with food & gas prices up here is the trucking costs to deliver.

Absolutely understandable. In this case I’d be costco or sam’s trips to duluth every other month, and planning them very meticulously and only buying very few items at the grocery store. It sucks but we’re in survive the recession mode and we have to do what we have to do.

I forgot to mention this is a great perspective for why socialism sucks. Imagine if every store was owned by the same company, and that company was the federal government. Truly a horrific thought.

I understand the Costco thing, however diesel fuel is still $5.30 a gallon and it’s about 2 hours each way. To pay for the diesel I would need to spend / save a bunch on groceries. Being just one person I don’t know that it’s worth it. I could see it with a family or four or more.

No matter what and for whatever reason the consumers are being jabbed.

Agreed. That’s why I have to go pheasant hunting this weekend, to provide food for the family. Just don’t do the math on that… whistling

Side note I cant wait to Pheasant hunt this weekend as I just got into in my 30s. Sure its costs money but meat you harvest yourself just gives you a sense of pride and its fun.

I also have started to buy meat in bulk to help on costs. Just have to adapt to these rising costs and find ways to save like buckybadger has done.

Please, Lord, let my wife never. ever add up the costs of hunting and then divide it by the pounds of meat harvested. Talk about bad economic policy!

Haha I try not to ever add up the costs myself! My fishing gear is another story. This year I got a Golden Retriever (mostly because I wanted one) but using her for hunting Pheasants, new gun, gear for the dog, and myself. If I get that 1 pheasant here in Wisconsin tomorrow that bird will not divide well from the costs I spent to get it. But seeing my dogs face in the field makes it priceless. What I was getting at it just is nice to go out and harvest something yourself. Kinda like when you repair something yourself rather than bring it to someone to fix it for you. Might not be the best explanation but I enjoy doing something on my own. There are ways you can help fight the costs of things but might have spend some money to do it haha.

Bluefin tuna? Wagyu beef? Sure, if you’re poor, the real most expensive foods on earth is pheasants and 13″ walleyes rotflol

I knew what you meant. Clearly one upland bird is not going to pay for the input to harvest that bird. Big game might have a slightly better payoff in terms of the quantity though. Good luck with the new hunting dog. Post your results in the pheasant hunting forum.

Upland hunting this is what its all about. Honestly I could really care less if I get anything. I get enough satisfaction out of watching my dog work. Id rather my boys shoot something than me. Most times I dont even shoot as long as they can get a shot off I let them.

To think turning off our oil exploration and relying on others for our fuel, does not contribute to prices on the grocery store shelves is beyond naive’. My god people.

I have tried that argument with Mrs. Grouse.

Me: “You can’t put a price on fun.”

Mrs. Grouse: “Yes you can. Last year you spent $6729 on items that roll up to the Household Budgetary General Ledger category of “Fun”. See? You can absolutely put a price on fun.”

    Me: “That’s no fun.”

Lol sounds like my conversations. But the 3rd boat was a really good deal. And everything else was on sale so I had to buy it. I was surprised when I sent her a pic of the deer stand some one sent me a screen shot of on here. She spent our kid free date night going to get it with me

Guess I’ll have to shop Kwik Trip for a few things then. I never shop Target. But even Cub and Walmart have been killing me lately.

Not me. Only time I stop at a Kwik Trip is to use the bathroom. I hate them.

    Too dang funny how
Liberals can be picked out miles away. They have hundreds of silly little antics that just immediately gives them away. The way they support the current administration has such a cry baby ring to it. At this point it has gotten hilarious to hear them whimper how the big guy doesn’t directly impact energy and food prices.

I can promise you that a responsible acting administration would have energy costs under control. The proof will be in the energy numbers very soon once bumbling is out of office.

I am surprised to see chicken wings come down in price so soon. Restaurants are offering endless wings again. With the bird flu, I had expected those prices to still stay high. If wings are so available again, I have no idea why eggs are so much more expensive still.

We try to save a few bucks here and there but some of the cheaper generic/ non brand name stuff just doesn’t taste the same!🙄

I like to eat and enjoy the food I make and have a hard time with compromising flavor to save a nickel.

On a side note, I will say some Menards have developed quite the grocery section. I can not remember if it was the Int falls one or not but I remember walking into several this spring and seeing a refrigeration section.

Rochester Menards stores have refrigerator sections in the grocery area.

WE garden so a lot of the veggies we use are frozen or canned so that helps us out a ton. We buy meat and other edibles when they are on sale. As for buying off brands and store branded items, some are fine, others are no so good so one has to try to find out what not to get.

For me groceries are like my fishing and hunting equipment…. I like to see first-hand what I am getting, and I refuse to order online. Besides, the exercise in shopping is good for me.

Yes, food and gas has gotten expensive right now. Everything has. I find it interesting that people carp about the cost of true necessities, but stay silent on alcohol and tobacco/vape products and other things that they can live without.

Great perspective especially on an outdoor chat line.
Fishing, Hunting, Boating, Camping, etc. are not cheap but hey!!!

Wings may have come down but they are still expensive IMO. Paying like $9/10 for six whole wings. I’m glad they are more readily available now, but still expensive.

A few weeks ago, our local HyVee stores in Rochester had 3-pound packages of frozen wings on sale at $5.99/package. No limit. I got 5 packages and I had Ma pick up 5. That’s less than $2.00 a pound and the wings are large. And good eating. I’ve been doing a package each Sunday for football snacking. Grill first, then in the crock pot on low with our favorite sauce.

Cub foods in town also had an identical offer a couple months back and we did the same thing. I have wings enough to get thru the season and playoffs.

As mentioned earlier, we watch the sales and take advantage of them big time. Even if we have to make a couple trips. Our local Fareway Stores have meat sales with 10 pound chubs of 85% hamburger for $2.99/pd. We’ll get a chub even if we don’t need it at the time. I re-wrap the chub into 6 equal sized packages. When store offer the 1-pound chubs of at least 85% burger we buy as much as allowed per the sale. Right now Fareway in Byron has 8 ounce New York strips at $4.99/8 ounce steak, limit ten. The store is not open Sundays so we’ll make the run of 9 miles and we’ll each get ten, wrapped two to a package. And Fareway has some of the best meats in the area.

There are al;l kinds of sales and specials on meats and other items people normally purchase if one takes the time to snoop adds and then make an effort to actually go buy the stuff. Its a lot cheaper and healthier than grumbling about the high prices and/or pointing fingers at people that are in no way responsible for the dire straits we’re in with gas and groceries.
