I have 100’s and 100’s of tubes ranging from 3″ to 4.5″ Honestly I like to throw a 4-4.5″ tube. I’ll throw a smaller 3-3.5″ tube in the spring if I have to, but I still favor the larger variety.

    What size do you prefer?

i am also a big fan of 4″/4.5″ tubes, i don’t think i have ever used one smaller unless it was for pan fish.

I am addicted to tubes also, I have too many actually.
Mostly I will throw 4 inchers, sometimes I will go smaller on pressured water and have had great success.

    And …

is one salt just as good as the next salt ?

Gary, bigger tubes for Smallies. Those Mille Lacs piggies like a “full-bodied” tube.

I’d have to say, salt is salt Dave. Unless you throw garlic in the mix.

I like the 4 inch ones with salt and garlic . After coming home from fishing the wife asked me what I ate in the boat that had so much garlic in it!!!!!!

4″ 90% of the time, 3″ 10%…used to use Susquehanna Snoozers (out of bus,) now use hookedupbait.com, mostly in Roadkill.

Speaking of mille lacs lake and tubes… we’ve all heard about fishing white tubes on mille lacs for smallies. If you read articles about fishing the lake a common presentation mentioned is to fish a 3″ white tube.

In 4 years of trying neither blue or I have ever caught a fish on a white bait on that lake. What gives? We go into the baitshops and that is all they talk about. We hit the water and the fish act like they’re laughing at us for fishing that color.

Throw a pumpkin color and it is “game on.”

Anyone here have the secret to the white tube deal on mille lacs and care to share it?

I do not know why everyone claims that it is the best thing since sliced bread BUT I have put the hurt on them with a 3 or 4 inch white tube certain days, other days they will not touch or even look at it. It also seems that the last few years that the smallies are getting more and more conditioned to white, at least it seems that way me as I have been getting less bites on white.
It is one color that is always in the boat though.

I can clearly remember balancing a white Sweet Beaver on the back of Smallie up there. I still think the fish was put there by a taxidermist….

What tube hooks do you guys like to use when fishing smallies?

I’ve become very happy with the Northland’s in 1/8 and 1/4. I like them because the eye come out at a 45 degree (or about) angle versus a 90 degree. It seems to give the tube a more erratic left to right. They also seem to get hung up in the rocks way less.

Have you guys seen these big shot tubes that Venom makes. They come 4″ long and are just over and inch wide. They are a trick to rig up sometimes but when the fish are looking for something with a bigger profile they are awesome.
