Walleye spawn

Have fished the dam and new jetties the last week with little success. The water temp is 47 along dam and 50 in bays. Am not marking the number of fish we did a year ago. Ice fishing success on walleye was poor. Has sherman lost some of its numbers? NGP will start milking the 6th. This might tell us more.

Sherman has a great stocking program as well as a little natural recruitment. The spawn this year should be right on schedule. I would bet the 6th would be peak time for Sherman. I plan on being up there this weekend getting the camper all set up for the season!!! Hopfully I’ll have some time to get on the water.

Here are the numbers from walleye stocking the last 10 years at Sherman.

Date County Lake species number size
    06/08/2009 Sherman Sherman Reservoir Walleye 94800 1.4
    06/10/2009 Sherman Sherman Reservoir Walleye 55600 1.4
    06/06/2001 Sherman Sherman Reservoir Walleye 142250 1.1
    06/03/2003 Sherman Sherman Reservoir Walleye 141860 1.2
    06/07/2005 Sherman Sherman Reservoir Walleye 70000 1.4
    05/30/2007 Sherman Sherman Reservoir Walleye 153000 1.3

NGPC surveys do not show a decrease. I would be willing to guess though that the added spawning habitat coupled with higher water this year may result in a less “concentrated” spawn. They maybe a little more spread out. If that leads to better recruitment I will take it.

According to the 2009 fall survey the 2008 year class recruited well at Sherman. It was there highest 10-14 inch survey in years. Note there was no stocking in 2008 of walleye in Sherman. Those are all naturally produced fish
