Got to take a quick trip out on Island lake Saturday afternoon. Had one of the kids from my sons boy scout troop join us as he had never been ice fishing before. We only had a couple of hours to fish so I figured Island was a easy walk out and a pretty good bet for him to catch a few pan fish.

1st set of holes drilled and we where on panfish. Dropped a Zebra gil pil down the hole, handed the rod to Max and he had is first ice fishing fish on the line. It was a nice 6 to 7″ sunfish and a great way to get him started.

The next couple of hours we hole hoped around and caught many more sunnies and crappies. The most active fish where 5 to 10′ down in 17 to 20′ of water. Berkley gulp on gil pils and diamond jigs where the baits of choice. Light lines and watch the rod tips was key to detecting there light bites.

We ended our trip with a couple of dozen panfish caught. Max kept a few for a meal and sounded like he had a great time on the ice. On the way home he was all ready making plans for his first ice fishing rod purchase.

    Good afternoon on the ice.
