I took my daughter to a local pay pond where for only $2 you can catch and release as many fish as you want. It was a fun time for dad and a 3-year-old.

They are edible but not a great food fish. However, they are fantastic sport. They fight hard, bite often, are a hardy fish to handle so several pay ponds have sprung up just for the sport of it. The locals have tournements at these ponds often and go here once a week like a bowling league. That is the commercial side of it. I went during the week to have the whole place to myself though.
Bungsamlan has become a more well known destination for a pay pond. It is located in Bangkok and is about 20 acres in size. I have been there several times and this park is full of really big fish. I’m talking 150 lb.+ Giant Mekong Cats, 200 lb.+ Arapaima, 100 lb.+ Siamese Carp and several other species. The cost here is more like $30 for the day but it is worth it once in a while. It is easy to catch 400-500 lbs. of fish here in a whole day.
I still like chasing fish in the wild better but these places are cool to have especially since the Giant Mekong Catfish and other species that exist there are becoming very rare in the wild.
Oh yea, and the weather is awesome here right now.
However, I will be sweating my buns off when it is awesome there.December 11, 2008 at 2:22 am #727758Let’s see some pics of those big fish, even if they are catfish.

Here is my PB Mekong Catfish and Chao Phaya and they get much bigger too. These were caught at Bungsamlan in Bangkok. The first one weighed 65 lbs.

The second fish looks like what our guide in FL called a Sail Cat. But that was in salt water.
