just read elsewhere there is still 34-38 inches of ice on the main lake away from current. the river was really beginning to open last week but i’m sure that slowed down!
April 6, 2018 at 6:28 pm #1765807Isn’t the whole chain pretty much current? I know a large chunk of the chain is formed by the river running through it. There will be plenty of open water there by the opener. You might be playing bumper boats but…………
April 6, 2018 at 6:45 pm #1765811Not really. The winter acess areas don’t have much current. I love driving by the chain on opener it is bumper boats on the river. I’d stay away from the actual river and narrow areas.
April 11, 2018 at 9:41 am #1766838I was cutting through about 24-26″ of ice yesterday on Cedar Island away from current. There’s still 6-8″ of heavy snow on the ice, with more coming. That hot April sun isn’t touching it. The edges are softening up a little, too.
I also have a gut feeling that the Chain will only be 90% open by the fishing opener. There will be a few slabs of ice on Cedar and Horseshoe getting pushed around by the wind. It’ll be fishable, though.
April 30, 2018 at 6:40 pm #1771568how are the lakes looking up there? they gotta be close to free if not pretty close??
