Couple other threads mentioned Garmin is continually scanning and offering updates as much as spring/fall, and per their website allows for one FREE download of an update.

Unit was bought last fall, so my Garmin xpress says my lakevu hd map is up to date, being version 2016/10, is this the last update?
There should be a 2017 update. I haven’t performed the update on my units, but I did buy the new 2017 HD Ultra map card.
Maybe Danny could correct me if i’m wrong, but the new update has to remain on the card for Echomap units. The internal storage on the echomaps isn’t big enough to hold all the new data for the 2017 release. You will be able to get the update on your card and keep it in your unit for the new lakes and added detail on lakes that were previously mapped.
I plugged an SD card from my graph into my PC and Garmin Express showed that 2017.1 was available to download.
Maybe I’ll try reinstalling express, thanks for info.
