Anyone been out on the chain lately and have an update on how thick the ice is?
sorry I live near the chain and haven’t been out there yet. heard they have been doing some driving out there.
I did a horseshoe lake driveby sunday. there were vehicles parked along the shoreline on the 22 winter access and seen a truck out by the meth hole. out on long lake there where several vehicles out.
a few days ago I heard was 18″ of honeycomb ice getting worse by the day….
Has anybody been out on the horseshoe in 2016? Wondering if it’s safe yet
this post could be dangerous, it is from Jan 2015….. if someone does not pay attention to the dates, driving on any part of the chain could be the end of them….
I saw somewhere else that there was 6″ on parts of it last weekend.
Agree with the dangerous part…
I was up there this morning (1/9/2016) for a visit to my parents house and it they have around 6″ on a lake with no current and maybe 2″ of snow. A few fish houses out, mostly walking traffic and did see a small 3 wheeler. Most of the channels are still open, so as always you have to watch it up there.
14″ on horseshoe. Lots of few lookers, no biters. Why don’t they bite? Full belly?
17″ and holding, even with the rain and warm temps.
A few biting fish. Very quiet time.
I was thinking about going out to fish some cats near the meth hole tomorrow. How safe is it driving from the south winter access to there? Or am I better off just coming from the north access? Is the thin ice clearly marked?

Nothing is marked as far as I can tell. Started with 15-18″ of ice in the morning. Down 1″ as of 5pm.
all the reports I am seeing and hearing ice fishing on the chain is OVER! guys that went out yesterday were stepping thru the ice this morning!!!!
yep, will be an early ice out this year for sure… the main river channel is starting to open up and once that happens everything goes pretty quick… I predict a March 31st ice out…
I drove by the chain last nite…..NOONE was out and the ice looked as black as the road I was driving on. shorelines are open about 2-3 feet out!
I was out there on Saturday, the entire river channel is wide open and the ice is starting to break up and float down, I suspect if we get any wind this week, the ice will be off most of the lakes by the weekend.
Just got word that the chain is about 90% open as of today. I grew up on the chain and that is about the earliest I remember it going out.
