Bait Rig Spinner Sizes

Man, cabin fever has hit me hard. I’ve been sorting through, arranging tackle for the 3rd time this month, and a question hit me.

I had great success on the river last summer with 3-ways and spinner rigs, and have been tying some up for something to pass the time. I generally use #4 or #5 Colorodo, Indiana, or hatchet blades. Just curious what some of you use, size and style, pattern, etc. If I come up with some new ideas, it will give me hours more tying time, so I don’t wear my tackle boxes out moving stuff from place to place!

My favorite is a #0 or #1 colorado. Best color has been rainbow trout pattern on gold, but I wouldn’t put too much stock in that, because I don’t experiment much.

    John,

I seldom use spinner bait rigs but when the water gets murky in July and August they can be deadly. It is the added flash that helps to counter the murky water. I’ve never paid much attention to the size of the blades. I have several sizes in my tackle box. The ones I use the most are about 3/4″ long. I like fluorescent red-orange or shiney gold. The only problem I have with spinner rigs on the river is the white bass. Most dams that hold walleye also hold at least a few white bass. Using a spinner just turns the white bass on. I know many fishermen that like to anchor above certain wingdams and fish spinner rigs with light-weight sinkers so that the rigs move back and forth in the current. This is a very effective way to fish spinner rigs.

I have been putting off going through my tackle. I have got to start thinking about getting everything ready as I hope to be able to be on the water by mid-March. With the Cabelas tournament coming to Dubuque at the end of May I hope to have at least a few days of guiding lined up so I had best get everything in order. I had qualified to fish last year’s tournament in Escanaba but was unable to go because of family commitments. I did not fish any tournaments this last year which means I did not qualify for the tournament to be held here in Dubuque this year. That at least leaves me open to do some guiding.

    Hey John,
If the fever got you that bad, give me a call. The water is still open down here. It’s been awhile since we shared a boat together.

I will do that soon Tony! Down with the flu right now, but that will pass in time. Gotta put a stretch in some line soon! May have to bring that short fuzzy guy along, just for forewarning!
