I need somebody to help me make sense of this. Walz & company just stole around 17 billion dollars from the taxpayers of Minnesota. The biennium budget for 2022 & 2023 was 52 billion dollars or about 26 billion per year. Those are fixed numbers, the numbers the state operates by.

Now the 17 billion dollar tax surplus is taxes that the state collected above and beyond any forecasts. This is a overpayment, much like if you hand the nice machine at Walmart a 10 dollar bill to pay for a purchase. The nice machine returns you change for a 100 dollar bill. Under law the 90 dollar mistake isn’t yours and needs to be returned to Walmart. On the state level it seems it’s treated as “finders keepers” and tough $hit you overpaid.

So now back to the budget. Walz and friends stole the 17 billion, there is no questioning that. It wasn’t theirs to give meager rebate checks. It wasn’t theirs to reallocate to pet projects. It wasn’t theirs to spend on education, infrastructure ect. Those are budget items that were agreed to for the current biennium.

Not on the ledge ready to leap off. But I’m not really ready to give the band of thieves a pass on this either. It won’t be the last you hear of this. BTW, they stole part of the money (yours) and used it on hatchery’s & accesses and then raised fee’s in other areas. You have the privilege of paying twice.

Maybe I’d look differently on this if the band of thieves said hey…. Lets credit the whole surplus against the 2023 budget, or lets pay down the state debt by 17 billion dollars, which would have been the honorable thing to do. But no……they stole it.

And just to be clear, it was both the Democrats & Republicans that did this. Walz was just the pivot on this particular circle jerk.

You choose to live here. Which means you implicitly accept the state’s system of taxation, which is part of our state law.

The government issued a forecast to say this is how much we think we’ll collect this year, for the purposes of setting a budget— or really, let’s call it what it is: a spending plan. The fact that the government collected considerably more than they expected to be able to does not make the additional money “stolen” or necessitate a refund. It just means they legally collected more than they thought they would. The wal-mart analogy sounds like something an 8 year old came up with.

I assume you paid your taxes this year. Those who paid more than their legal obligation were issued a refund. That’s it. The government owes you nothing beyond that. They collected your money legally and now it’s their money to do with as they agree amongst themselves. They were elected to do this very job.

If you can’t live with that, maybe look into South Dakota. Kristi Noehm might be more your cup of coffee.

Your fine with them way over collecting and then waving and saying thanks. It seems way to passive. I don’t get aggressive because nothing I say will help, but it’s called corruption. The rich line there pockets and we just bow to them. It’s not OK. But when they feed illegals and welfare at the rate they do its half impossible to change it. And I don’t mean that as dem vs rep, cause they both dirty nasty people. There isn’t a one of them I look at as a leader. More a corrupt system that needs to be broke

I don’t disagree that the system sucks, but the system is very clearly defined and yet we all choose to live here so suck it up buttercup is my approach. I get so tired of the over-dramatic BS. “They’re THIEVES!!” Haha. Suuure.

Fact: if you actually overpay your taxes, then you have a right to pursue a refund.

Fact: the citizens of MN paid what they legally owed and the state never “over collected.” They do suck at forecasting apparently.

Fact: there are a bunch of states with more favorable tax approaches. If you want to live in this great state— and I assume you like it or you wouldn’t be here— there is a cost associated with that and it’s not going anywhere but up.

Are some form of Walz checks coming soon? Or did I miss something?

I admittedly gave up trying to sift through the lies multiple presidents and governors ago.

The wife just told me on a whim tonight that when the kids graduate, she wants to rent out the homestead and continue to lease out the ag and hunting land and move to either Costa Rica or Barbados.

I opened a bottle of wine for her and a new bottle of Makers for myself to help coordinate the conversation. I could pivot faster than a corrupt politician to deep sea fishing in the blink of an eye

There are in fact surplus refund checks coming. They are expected to arrive starting in September. They are subject to income thresh holds, as usual.

Part of the surplus was spent on that massive outdoors bill that was recently discussed here. I am fine with using some of that money for that bill. Some of the other stuff they spent the surplus on, not so much. But that’s how it works, and they were all elected last fall. If you want changes, you have to win an election.

    EXACTLY!
We who have paid the most will not see a thing!!!…again!!!

I’m tired of working hard to be successful and getting penalties for it. Wife and I have worked hard to do well, don’t have kids, and pay close to 60% of our income so others can live off our teat. When they do over charge us they don’t give it back. They again give OUR money to someone else.

    Thanks BC

Now that I’m not seeing double, let me say that this is teetering on full blown socialism.
FDR (God love him) started welfare in 1935 as a bridge for people that were struggling, not a way of life.
Handouts (the list is long and now just got much longer) are off the rails now and tipping our democracy into a socialistic state especially in MN

There are 2 kinds of people –
Wagon riders and wagon pullers. What happens when everyone starts riding?
I know I’m getting too old and I’m very tired of pullin.

BTW – I drink to numb the pain of Politicians stealing my money.

A third kind of person is the wagon puller who doesn’t concern himself with anyone else, just happily works and enjoys his life and family and doesn’t get his undies in a bunch about someone who doesn’t work as hard getting a help. This person also educates himself on his home state/country policies and goes in with eyes wide open. He doesn’t necessarily agree with every policy but he knows that whining will get him nowhere. and since the positives of his country and state FAR outweigh the negatives, he pays his fair share without complaining.

I know, it’s shocking but we’re out there in numbers.

As far as being “educated on policies” education should have taught all of us, it is OK to protest over taxation… it is how we make our thoughts known & can even help inform those who are ignorant to what is actually happening in this great state of ours. coffee

Fact: the citizens of MN paid what they legally owed and the state never “over collected.” No, it’s a surplus not a deficit, so yes they did over collect to tune of 17 billion, only to expand government beyond its already boated size. Walz and his ilk want to turn this state into mini-California utopia.

The fact that someone is perfectly fine with a huge surplus and not giving the money back to the people all the while raising more taxes is an odd take.

I’ll try and tread lightly here, but there are 2 things that I just can’t comprehend. First, the Walz checks ended up being $260 for people who paid little to no taxes, even if you are ok with that, isn’t $260 worthless? Is anyone’s life really improved by that? Particularly when Walz himself proposed significantly higher amounts ($1k-2k previously). And they lowered who qualified to about 2.8M Minnesotans, and ended up redistributing only $1.25B of the $17.5B, so you would think there would be a bigger slice to go around if this is the route…

Secondly, not only is the $17.5B spent, they are increasing the state budget by 35% moving forward!

And those are the people who blindly got Walz in office in the first place.

I guess another way to look at is say you are told your bill is $25 when you go to the bar. You give them a $50 and they keep your change. Are you OK with them just keeping the change?

I think that the our for fathers in 1775 were better represented for their taxes by the king of England than we are now in a modern “free” society.
